Another splendid little story containing our fav soldier Macro, Pavo the aristocrat turned/ forced into service as a Gladiator is also becoming a fast fav. I find that Pavo can be a bit like a young cato, and that give me some nice nostalgic moments.
As usual we have Simons unique fast paced story, with great action and witty little scenes that have you laughing one min and wincing the next. Macro is the perfect irreverent hero, he is his own man and screw the world. I thought it a shame that certain characters will not make it beyond the last page, certain gladiators were really good bad guys, and as I'm watching the latest Spartacus drew some really nice comparisons.

I'm really looking forward to book 4 in May

This is the third in the series of novellas and continues the story of Pavo, a Roman aristocrat who has been sentenced to death in the arena for his father's crime of treason.
This time round, Pavo and Macro have to unite to quell a gladiator rebellion at the ludus where Macro has been appointed temporary lanista.

If you haven't already bought any of this series, then I would suggest reading the description before purchase. These are novellas, not full novels, but priced at £1.99 each, I personally find them to be reasonably good value for a couple of hours entertainment. It would seem that too many readers have been offering a low rating for these products because of their own inability to read a product description before purchase.

I am an enthusiastic reader of Simon Scarrow, But I found these to be disappointing as they appeared to be chapters of a book turned into short stories, and therefore you needed to purchase the series to have a conclusion.

Simon Scarrow pens a good read, having lived in the Pozzouli area for a few years and travelled to Paestum, and other historical sites, I found the series brings memories of the ruins to life for me. The characters Macro and Cato tend to draw me into his tales with their ever striving for (their) normality which always seems to be in the distance. brilliant.

A bit disappointed to have been offered this series of 5 (or was it 6) kindle books in this "Arena" series with future publication dates. Having just read the 3 Napoleon / Wellington books by Scarrow, which are proper novels, really well written and researched, and which take a decent time to read through, I sort of assumed these Arena series would be similar (although maybe the price of £1.99 should have warned me off!) They are OK, follow a theme but can be read in a few hours each. They should really be called short stories!
