i bought my copy as a promo in notting hill gate s/hand Exchange record shop some ten years or so ago and am glad i did. the tracks are here are from many many unknown outstanding funk bay area ie san francisco artists and groups that only true obsessives like Keb Darge of madam jo jo s saturday night dj fame would probably know about. i'm a big fan of the whole classic funk/soul/hip-hop sampling and blues/jazz cross over, so this cd is a real must for funk obsessives to snap up . other djs such as dj shadow and dj spooky et al have i'm sure trawled through many an obscure corner of a vinyl shop in search of the many superb funk tracks here.

if you want to go beyond all the main big names and groups of the whole funk era. get this it tremendous, rare and if you re a dj will have fellow crate diggers green with envy without the hassle factor of flying all the way to some US backwater record store to find the tracks here compiled by luv n haight. consistent, rare and funky and not too expensive. whats not to like ?

HASH(0x865a6c30) out of 5 stars Too good to be true ! 21 Mar. 2009
By Eddie Landsberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Yet another great collection of EXTREMELY rare '70s funk... this time, with focus on a number of extremely groovy and bumping group's from Tower of Power, WAR and Sly Stone's own back yard, the East Bay Area...

SF may be best remembered for flower power and the hippies, but after listening to this album you'll definitely be adding ultra wicked/ultra tight and slickly produced funk to the list...

Though most (if not all) of the groups on this compilation seemed to have missed the radar, all of the tracks represent tight production, arranging and the best of the best of raw early '70s funk... If horns, greasy Hammonds, wa wa guitar, and bumpin' fatback drums are your formula for fun, you can't go wrong with this mix of slick, ultra jivin' and heavy groovin' instrumentals as well as vocal tunes...

Belongs right up their with many of the other great funk compilations of recent years... including WHAT IT IS and FUNKY 16 CORNERS... tracks are well picked... no throw-aways... a straight through listening that will boost your FUNK-Q and keep you occupied for years to come.

Fans of STAX (circa the 70's) and the FATBACK BAND (circa the PERCEPTION years) will probably dig this compilation in particular... or, on the flip side of the coin, if you dig this compilation, check out the volume of the STAX boxed set dedicated to their final years, as well as THE FATBACK BAND's Perception years compilation.

HASH(0x865a6c90) out of 5 stars Rhythm in your bones 24 Dec. 2012
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com

You may not recognize any artists on this collection (the only one that I had heard of was Sugar Pie Desanto) but the music will definitely strike a familiar rhythm in your bones and the soul in your heart. As the main review said, other than Tower of Power and a handful of other bands, the Bay Area was not well known for it's stable of funk and soul acts. This, and the first volume of "Bay Area Funk" (also a very good collection) show that the area had a much deeper pool of musical talent than many would have thought. As Eddie's review notes, this collection explores a variety of funk-soul sounds, showcasing guitar, organ, and horns --- sometimes all at once, depending on the artist. Once again, collections of "no name" artists like these make for a most pleasing discovery for those of us who dig the funky soul sounds of the 1970s. Good booklet with lots of info too.
HASH(0x87302300) out of 5 stars Great running music! 29 Dec. 2012

I was on Pandora and came across a few songs that I was able to find on this album. I love the fact that these songs are not overplayed on the radio, media or internet. Makes a great set for those training or fun runs.
