This review is for the original US CD issue of Are You Experienced on Warner/Reprise, catalogue number 6261-2.

It's important before I go any further to make clear that not all CDs of that description were created equal.

The first batch of 6261-2 pressings were straight transfers from the original stereo mastertape, making them probably the best masterings of any digital release of this album.

Due to internal record company shenanigans this first pressing was deleted within a year and replaced with a "silent remaster". That second pressing looked exactly the same as the previous edition. It had the same catalogue number, same barcode, same packaging, same printing on the disc. But it was treated with noise reduction technology which muffled the sound somewhat in comparison to that of the previous CD.

The ONLY way to tell the difference between the first two CD masterings of the 6261-2 pressing is by checking the selection of tiny numbers printed around the CD's centre hole, known as the matrix. If the matrix contains the text "RE 1", the disc is the slightly later pressing.

That said, judged entirely on it's own the "RE-1" disc is quite alright for what it is. The average listener probably wouldn't find anything wrong with it. But when compared directly with the none "RE-1" the difference in quality is noticeable, the latter having far more clarity.

To digress briefly, later remasters have claimed to be taken directly from the original tapes, but each has suffered from some manner of additional modern tampering. In the case of the early 1990s remaster with the altered front cover, some noise reduction was used and some of the tracks ran at slightly too slow.

I'm not going to gush. Just BUY this. Really.

This is Jimi's debut album, the first outpouring of his purple sci-fi funky psychedelia, and it was pretty revolutionary in its day. He was somewhat under the thumb of Chas Chandler at this stage, so the formats are all tight three minute-something commercial song recordings. And he was hugely influenced by the gods of the contemporary British rock scene, whilst remaining true to his R & B chitlin' circuit roots, (and of course his love of Dylan - check out his hair), so there's a definite flavour of the surrounding melee of the likes of Clapton/Cream, The Who, etc. Mostly though this album demonstrates Jimi's radical uncompromising creativity, both in terms of song structure, sound, guitar-playing (feedback makes a few appearances), content and psychedelic qualities. This was Jimi's entry into the British scene, using the jazz monster Mitch Mitchell on drums and ex-six stringer Noel Reading on bass, a three-piece power trio that pretty much defined the phrase. The black/white line-up was radical at the time, convention busting, so too the way they looked, the volume of their gigs, and mostly Jimi as a blinding guitar-player, presence and force of nature. Classic songs.

This album paved the way for his next offering Axis Bold as Love and his later masterpiece Electric Ladyland, perhaps truer visions of some of Jimi's exotic voodoo juice, and certainly more favoured listening by myself, but none of that would have happened without this initial body of work to pave the way.

Go on, get yourself acquainted with a slice of 1967 history...you might just find yourself yelling out: "'Scuse me while I kiss the sky."

This was a present for my son who was very pleased. I found it on his wish list ( great to have this) and he always only chooses items that cannot be bought cheaper elsewhere. Great price and great service too.

I think it's useless to say that this CD (the music not the plastic) is a rare example of perfection and achievement in the realm of music.
I think J Hendrix was a genius. Not a “technician” per say of the playing of the guitar but a man of innovation and a man who invented a new way to play the guitar.
It’s easy, isn't it !!????No it's not. and there are a lot of "guitar heros" who dream to reach his perfection.

This album is a true classic. A masterpiece. The virtuoso himself at his very best. Contains the classic tracks you are looking. If for some reason you don't know Hendrix very well, this is an excellent place to start!
