I have always liked Mr Sheldon's books and my favourite of all is ''If Tomorrow Comes'' which I read quite a few times. But this one was quite a disappointment. It simply doesn't feel right. The story plot does not add up and it is way too easy. The characters are unlikeable and totally unreasonable, I had to skip some dialogues between Diane and Kelly as they were so bland and ridiculous. Mr Sheldon usually masters well the depth of human duplicity but not in this case. I did not check when it was written but for me, it did not feel like a story written by Mr Sheldon at all. It is like someone tried to badly copy his style and put his name on the cover.
The 3 stars are because I cannot bring myself to rate lower a book from Sidney Sheldon. I suppose one cannot always be on top of things but I do not really recommend this book if you are a fan.

Contrary to most of the other reviews, I loved this book. I have read all his books, and had this book sitting on the shelf for weeks before I picked it up and started reading. Its very fast, and each chapter makes you want to read on, a typical page turner. I admit its far fetched at times, but it kept me guessing. As an avid reader of James Patterson, James Herbert , Mary Higgins Clark et al, I expected to be able to guess the ending - I was wrong. Its a great book, typical of Sidney Sheldons style, and great for absorbing yourself and letting the world drift by

Sidney Sheldon writes what I call a great "trashy" read. Her plots are not rocket science and her characters are one dimensional and totally disposable.

Are you afraid of the dark is one of Sidney's best "trashy" novels to date and I really enjoyed it.

You have two sparkling heroines Diane Stevens and Kelly Harris both married to scientists who are killed in mysterious circumstances and who find themselves running from a vicious hit man with a penchant for hurting people before he kills them.

Using their brains to outwit a mad billionaire with global domination on his mind, the girls find themselves struggling to stay alive as they flee bullets, traitors, and sadistic hit men with the odds totally stacked against them until finally they make the fateful decision to stand their ground and fight back in order to reclaim their lives.

You can't call this book a classic in any sense of the word, its pure escapism, pure trash and pure fun.

I loved it, there are days that you need a read where you don't have to put your brain cells into overdrive and this book is one of those reads.

I can't give it more than three stars despite enjoying it so much simply because it is so trashy, but three out of five is not bad for a book that has to really come under the genre of great "brain rot" rather than an intellectual read of merit!

Although not my favourite Sheldon, it is certainly up there. Two women from totally different backgrounds have one thing in common. Their husbands work for the same think tank company and have both been murdered. They both meet each other by sheer chance and it isn't until they start conversing together that all is not what it seems with regards to their husbands' death. Initially they dislike each other intensely and it isn't until they become a joint target by a ruthless killer that a mutual respect and liking starts to form.

A fast paced gritty under rated novel. Would recommend.

Contrary to the official blurb, this is far from a writer 'at the top of his form'. Like the second reviewer, I've read all of Sidney Sheldon's books over the years and have becoming increasingly disappointed with each new release. After a four year wait since 'The Sky Is Falling', this has to be his worst book yet, with an utterly predictable, laughable plot and characters that struggle to be even one-dimensional. A few chapters in I found myself wondering if the author had actually written this book himself, or just dictated the plot to his 10 year old nephew and had him write it for him - the writing really is that poor. I wonder if perhaps it's time for Mr Sheldon to hang up his pen and retire from writing gracefully (he is in his late 70's after all), leaving his fans with their memories of the far better work he did in his early career. If you're a Sheldon fan, do yourself a favour, save your 3.99 and re-read one of his earlier books instead. You will gain nothing but disappointment if you buy this book.

Sidney Sheldon's latest novel follows in the tradition of his previous best-sellers and his fans will not be disappointed. This time out, we learn that several key employees of an international think tank have been horribly and mysteriously murdered. Two of their widows, Diane Stevens and Kelly Harris, join forces to uncover the truth, and find themselves marked for death by a power-hungry madman who wants to control the world.
Sheldon specializes in breezy melodramas featuring beautiful, strong, and infinitely resourceful young women; in this story, we get two of them - naive artist Diane and cynical supermodel, Kelly. The ladies find themselves in mortal peril countless times, and they come out of each sticky situation by using their brains, pluck, and good-old Sidney Sheldon girl-power.
If you like Sheldon's lightweight but often exciting brand of chick-flick-type novels, you will enjoy "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" It's an entertaining, quick read with spunky heroines and glamorous locations.
