After plenty of deliberation I finally bought myself an MP3 player. Price was a primary concern, followed by capacity, followed by battery life. Oh yeah - and i couldn't have bought an iPod of any type on principle!!
20Gb - Physically smaller than an ipod mini (in height at least) and a claimed 10 Hr Battery - Archos have a great product here.
When you open this and actually hold it in your hand - the pictures on the website dont do it justice.
    Pros:
Very solid (feels like metal but I might be wrong)
Its very compact and can easily be used one-handed.
    Just Drag and Drop
It needs no drivers for any windows platform over 98.
No silly management software needed either.
Still testing battery life but 8+ Hrs continuous play achieved before i went to bed and it was still going strong.
Simple to Use, plenty of options
    It's not an iPod! Yay!
    Cons
Poor Headphones - if you are an audiophile, fine enough otherwise.
Few optional extras (no cases etc readily available)
No Better, equally sized, equally priced, option - simple decision

One thursday in February 2005, I decided to buy a MP3 player. Although I loved the I-Pod design, countless sales assistants told me to look elsewhere, citing compatability worries and mediocre sound quality. Having never heard of Archos, I checked several independent reviews. Quickly satisfied by rave reports, I took the plunge.
    ...Wow!
The Gmini is a gorgeous, expensive looking and feeling product in its own right; it's light yet substantial, elegantly designed and perfectly tactile. The Archos was everything I'd wished and more. Interface worries need not concern all but the most butter-fingered simpletons - they're intuitive and effective. Paired up with a set of Sennheiser PX100 headphones (another bargain) it sounded fantastic. I have 500+ CDs and am struggling to stuff the little Gmini, even though I use 256kb/s MP3s.
I-Pod? There is an alternative. Buy one now!

I bought this mp3 player just a few weeks ago and haven't regretted it for a second. For anyone out there looking through the mass of MP3 players available I STRONGLY reccomended The Archos Gmini XS200.
Once getting this the first thing that struck me is how small it really is, but there is so much more to this player. Unlike many MP3 players today (All players by Creative for example) the Archos offers drive letter support. No software or drivers is needed, you simple connect the player to your computer via USB, drag and drop all your music into the player and in a few minutes you're ready to go. This means the device also acts as a portable storage device for music or any anything else.
Using the player is amazingly simple, at first i thought because there is just three buttons that functionality would be limited but this is not the case, using the small button in the middle primarily actually works very well. Archos have done a great job with this player and as it's both smaller and cheaper than many other 20gb players this is a great buy.

I look up the list of most peoples `best mp3 players` and the ipod was at the top. THE TOP!
Let me clear something up, archos made the FIRST hard drive mp3 player and they have the best sound. They have been advancing when the ipod was just a dream with a price tag.
I got an archos multimedia 20 before the ipod was out, it was 20gb and had a colour screen, damnit, you could watch movies on it..
THe only thing I have ever seen complaining about archos products are things like the earphones or what it looks like etc.
FACT! it looks a DAMN site better than an ipod
    FACT! Looks dont even matter
FACT! This may suprise you, but Im buying an mp3 player for the sound and no matter what I got, I am going to buy better earphones.
Now I got the gmini just last week and Im in love with it. Its not just smaller than an ipod, its almost half the size of an ipod MINI and is 20gb (the ipod mini is 5gb)
Now, considering a charge lasts me all day with music in my ears, lets not forget, 20gb of music.
It is also the LOUDEST mp3 player I have heard.
And being a musician (if you dont believe me check out [...]) then I can hoenstly say the sound beats everybodys hands down. The bass response is amazing and the dynamics almost confuse me with something this small.
    Recommended? Guess
I live for music and I will die with it in my ears.
It frustrates me then that people fall for commercialism and jump on the ipod band wagon...

    By A Customer on 20 July 2005
When my old mp3 broke, i decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about and buy an iPod. and looking back on it, i almost made the worst decision of my life. i noticed this very well priced Archos mp3 player on here and i thought '20gb mp3 player at that price, they must have cut back on something'. the only thing is, Archos havent. to my astonishment, people were rating it better than any other mp3 player on here. i decided to try it out. when it arrived a few days later, i could not get over how small this is. it fits comfortably into the palm of a childs hand and weighs no more than an empty DVD case. it comes fully charged so straight away you can put music onto it and it doesnt come with an annoying setup cd as the computer (or mac) recognizes it instantly. size and weight wise, this thing is smaller than the iPod mini by a long shot, but because of the immense hard drive, this is a touch wider than the Apple machine. to put music on it, ANY programme works. windows Media, musicmatch, iTunes, you name it, the XS200 will be compatible with it. Windows media is best for ripping cd's however and the Archos is compatible with iTunes so it makes downloading songs child's play.
To sum up then, this is without a shadow of a doubt the best mp3 player on the market today. do not be fooled by the non-recognizable brand, these guys are geniuses. they have taken a massive 20gb hard drive and placed it into this machine. please dont waste your money on something that is the £5 cheaper (iPod mini 4gb), but has 5x less memory. do what you know is right and buy one of these now.
