As a gadget lover buying the Archos 480 was an easy decision to make. The feature set is amazing. After unwrapping, connecting the power and whizzing around the menus my suspicion that the iPOD is a dinosaur was confirmed. The addition of an amazing LCD screen with easy to use TV, DVD and JPEG image handling brings the Archos into a higher league. Unfortunately, after an overnight charge, my new archos could only manage about 3 mins without the mains power. Duff batteries - so back to the shop for an exchange unit. The second unit had no charging issues and the manufacturers portable stamina claims were proved accurate once i stopped contantly navigating the menus. Next came the hard work of trying to fill that vast 80 gig with some of my music, movies and holiday snaps. Music played well as do DVDs and TV recordings but my JPEGs looked pixelated on the screen. The 640X480 demo images on the unit look beautiful but my 4MP Casio Exilim Z4 pics look poorer quality?During the first few weeks I managed to use about 15G of space so you can imagine my dismay when mid WMA file playback it threw a fit and corrupted about half the data on the hard drive - including the whole music library.I returned unit no2 to the shop again and was a little suprised to hear that every 480 they have sold has been returned. That dampened my enthusiasm to have another. In the end i'm happy to have the money back in my pocket. When it works its awesome, but all fellow gadget lovers will understand the distress and grief that an unreliable product can cause.I'm not rich enough to pay more than half a grand for something that lets me down this much. I'm waiting until I'm sure that things are sorted (hopefully the price will drop too).

I am not one for wasting money and so, just like everybody else did a bit of research into this product before parting with my hard earned. The reviews I read were mixed to say the least but I found that the majority of complaints people had seemed to be about trivial matters, so I decided to take the plunge on the Archos AV480. To say I am extremely pleased with my purchase is an understatement and have found the unit extremely user friendly and simple to operate. The device is very well made and the robust controls and finish are excellent. Recording from external video sources is simple and gives superb results which can be modified and edited after recording. Converting video files to play on the supposedly picky operating system is an absolute doddle and takes roughly half of the runtime of the file using free to download software. Music sounds superb especially through an external hi-fi source and again is exteremely easy to add and remove. Beleive me this is the ultimate gadget that does exactly what it says on the tin and gives superb reproduction in all areas. Highly recommended. !!!

OK, if you want to know all the pros of this device, then go to the Archos website where they'll be happy to indulge you. It is a cool looking device and you'll be the envy of your fellow airplane passengers, not to mention your work colleagues.
However, once you've owned one for about a week, you suddenly find that it's not quite as slick as you were hoping. If you want to know the cons before you spend your £500 (or whatever), then read on...
* It does not record anamorphic widescreen TV programs. Well, it sort of does but, when you play back your recorded programs on the Archos, the picture will be squashed horizontally and look pretty rubbish as a result. There is no way to convert or display this file in the correct aspect ratio. If you have a widescreen TV and a Freeview or Sky Digital box, you need to bear this in mind.
* It has a 4:3 screen whereas the vast majority of Hollywood films are in 2.35:1. This means that most of your DVD films will only occupy around 1/3 of the screen and you will have huge black bars above and below the picture. This will not impress your friends, so have some 4:3 video on standby.
* The slideshow mode is extremely slow. Each picture draws slowly from top to bottom on the screen and it takes approximately 2 seconds for the full image to be displayed. This happens regardless of whether you are displaying on the LCD screen or showing your pictures to the family on your television.
* The picture quality for digital photos, even when viewing through the television, is rubbish. In fact, I would forget about storing any digital photos on this device completely.
* You can create and delete directories but you can't copy or move any files into them. D'oh!

Once i had opened the boxes and saw the archos i was amazed at how cool, small and portable it was. The charging time is brilliant and the LCD display is also of a very high quality. If anyone was thinking of getting an ipod think again because this is the true king of MP3 and MP4 plays. Buy it now!!

The Archos AV480 is dead clever, very few problems with it, make sure that if you buy this then purchase some decent headphones. I got the PX200's they are wicked.
Pro's... This does almost everything and 80gb is ample memory, easy to use, looks smart, better than Ipod.
Con's... Expensive, newer version out already "however only 30gb"
I would say this is worth every penny because it is the only device that can do all this. The only problem I have is with Archos as they never seem to reply to email's that you send them. So if you need advice you are better off phoning them.
