It is neither small, cheap nor light. It has an inscrutable blocky air and if you were looking for something light and unobtrusive, this isn't it. You might want to go and actually look at one before parting with yer cash! The 60GB is a lot thinner than the 120/250GB and the bigger one has a hard drive. It isn't wholly silent but I must admit to enjoying its faint whooshing noise - the sound of quality!
Like most of this stuff, the battery has a shallow charge at delivery and will not come fully to life until it has cycled flat to fully charged a few times. I've never run mine flat yet as the PC quietly charges it through the USB port whether I would or no. It's the same in the car, of course. The manufacturer says 7 hours video and 13 hours music replay, but I always view manufacturer's claims of MPG, battery life or toner cartridge life as deeply suspect - "Oh, you're going to turn it on, are you sir?" If I get half those figures, I'll be happy.
The screen is stunning. Clear, pin sharp and HD quality with an excellent, fast response rate and is actually watchable. Mine has no pixel errors although almost everyone else seems to have at least one or two. Can't see any way around that if you are buying it on line as the manufacturer says you've got to be happy if there are only three. Excuse me, but I thought this was the 21st century? Go to Comet, pay the extra, and see it working!
The Wi-Fi is excellent, finds new connections in seconds and has a decent range.
It is a fairly new device & still a bit buggy. The widgets don't work very well. The weather forecast is OK (the French have got the Brits sussed!) but the currency converter and calculator are sulking. No doubt I'll turn it on one day & they'll be working just fine! The Archos.com site isn't very friendly or intuitive and as sparse as trees on tundra. I spent ages trying to download the latest updates to the PC and thence to the Archos without any success at all. Damned fool I felt when I checked the Archos to find that it had already done it "up to date" it said ..... Not much sign of life or help there, sadly - they really do need to up their game on customer support (still waiting for a reply, several days now).
The other - and much more serious - thing that doesn't work too well is the Flashplayer. Frankly, it depends on the site, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
To sum up, it plays music very well. The large screen means those of us who would like an iPod but don't want to peer dimly at a moving postage stamp can sit back and tap the BIG touch screen with smooth delight. Video is also very good and I've no doubt they will sort the firmware out before the customers get too restive.
Inevitably, you're going to need peripherals, but they are not expensive and offer excellent present opportunities for the spouse and children who bi-annually ask "What CAN I get you?"
If you are going to buy one I would recommend that you gat that Version as there are lots of applications for it.
I am on my second machine I bought the orginal one in September but the hard disk failed in Jan of this year However no problem there Amazon sent me a new one and refunded the postage on the cost of returning the old one.
The new one has a better screen but the disk is still giving problems and I have needed to reset the device a number of time (you do not loos your data when you do this)
I would recommend that you buy the battery dock as it makes the recharging much simpler and the problems with the disk seem to be worse when the battery goes flat unexpectedly.
Over all I am happy with the device but wish I had the Android Version
There are however some things to be aware of. It is not plug and play...it helps to be a bit of a techy to set everything up...or have the assistance of someone who is. The demos on the Archos website are helpful but you will still find gaps that you need to fill in for yourself. The Archos tech support via the web is hopeless, but you can download the full user manual....the little thing that comes with the kit is very limited.
Secondly , if you are going to make recordings (and you probably wouldn't be considering this if you weren't) the DVR station is essential....just not possible without it.
Thirdly , if you are planning to travel and play back through another TV etc. then you either have to take the DVR station with you(which is relatively cumbersome and has a bunch of cables attached to it) or do as I did and purchase the Mini Dock.
Fourthly , there is no separate charger. As a stand alone item it must be charged via USB....so on the move you would need access to a USB outlet or take a separate Mains/USB charger (not supplied). Of course it does charge through both the DVR station and the Mini Dock and it's much faster that way.
These are all things I only fully appreciated after the purchase.
I am delighted with its performance....oh...and I bought the leather case as well!!
Pros: useful touch screen, reliable wi-fi, good video playback (for those supported).
