A fascinating look at a type of building which I had no previous idea prefigures 20C modernism: the iron and glass structures built for events like the Great Exhibition. At times it's a little too stiffly phrased, as if Murphy's imagining it as an academic piece, but it won't prevent anyone enjoying this erudite & original survey.

I work as a building professional and I'm fascinated with architecture. However, I got bored with this book very quickly. The style is turgid and uber-academic. This ranks alongside the yellow pages ... it's not a joy!
