Archery in the UK: New Lyrical Ballads and Other Poems Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

Inspired by the Lyrical Ballads of Wordsworth and Coleridge, two authors set out to pen a contemporary homage to this timeless collection. As the collaboration progresses, however, the poetry and the unique narrative it carries takes on a life of its own. Thus, the authors come to tell their story through a collection of ballads, sonnets, pantoums and other forms: under arches, over bridges and against the backdrop of the fabled Northlands: from Tyne and Wear to Cumbria and beyond.

Review

"If you are you looking for a poetry collection that will put a huge smile on your face, this is the book for you. Ingrid Wilson and Nick Reeves have created a book of contemporary lyrical poetry, the likes of which I haven't seen" - Barbara Harris Leonhard, Editor, MasticadoresUSA. "Reading Archery in the UK left me with a strong feeling of saudade that stayed with me long after I'd finished the book-which is the best recommendation I can give to encourage other readers to experience this remarkable volume of collaborative poetry." - Elizabeth Gauffreau, author of Grief Songs (Paul Stream Press, 2021)."Archery in the UK is a true delight. It is a joy to read. We journey with these lovers, feel their sorrow and happiness-and witness the growth of their love." - Merril D. Smith, author of River Ghosts (Nightingale and Sparrow Press, 2022).

"This collection is a beautiful love story, blooming with rhythm and metaphor...These poems are original, gorgeously entwined yet universal."

- Kristiana Reed, Editor, Free Verse Revolution.

While reading this beautiful and deeply-moving collection of poems, certain associations kept popping into my head. Sonnets from the Portuguese. Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Robert Browning. This book is quintessentially a collection of verses devoted to Love - the remarkable uniting of two cherished souls, love of the land, love of nature, love of beauty, and love of the language that allows us to shape our thoughts, feelings, and dreams into words.
Most of the poems in this collection are not sonnets, but the quality, tone, rhythm, and spirit of these verses capture the essence of Shakespeare, the two Brownings, and classic British lyrical poetry in general. Love in this poetic realm spreads its wings wider and flies higher than mortals are allowed in the ordinary world. The poets invite us into their secret bower of shared passion and romance, reminding us that love is a beautiful gift, and so is every precious moment of our lives.
This is an excerpt from Honeymoon Night, whose simplicity, sincerity, and repetition captured my heart and helped me to visualize the scene so clearly:
    ". . . Our bodies entangled
    our minds even more so
    complete, I love you oh
so sweet, I love you so.
    The candlelight flickers and flares
    trickles tallow
    temptation's so sweet - oh
I do so love you so.
    As husband and wife
    we awake on the morrow
'I do' and 'I will' so
    I'll always love you so.
    Our honeymoon song's
    taken up by the sparrow:
I do so love you so
I do so love you so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A soft and seamless collaborative creation. Highly recommended!

Pre-publication highlights of Archery in the UK acknowledged that this collection is “something quite different.” Having recently completed this captivating collection, I wholeheartedly agree. Contained within a cover that is artistic and sophisticated, are sixty-eight timeless poems that bring a land and a love to life. The poems do not promote a boastful love, nor do they leave the reader with a taste of something artificial. Rather, the reader will sense a genuine poetic connection that cannot be falsely created. The reader will become absorbed in the soft and seamless dance occurring between two poets with the turn of each page. Quite different indeed. It is a slow-sipped tea during a peaceful afternoon. It is a meander through a lush garden with aromatic flowers in bloom. It is worth your time. You will want to quickly turn each page, but you will stop yourself, because this is a collection that should be savored. I highly recommend this collection, a collaboration between two talented poets.
