When a product gleans as much praise as this iPod dock any slight tendency to knock it may be viewed with suspicion or dismissed outright. However, having had my rCube for almost a couple of months now I can offer you my opinions on what is so special about this product.

Arcam have produced excellent quality hi-fi products for a number of years but have only now decided to join the sea of products produced for the iPod. Without going into the minutiae of its technical abilities you can take it that not only is it beautifully and robustly built but above all performs supremely well sonically. But therein lies a small area of concern. With a trend in current mastering techniques to make music transients hit the maximum possible digital signal level of 0dBFS distortion can often be present in the source material and coping with this fact means masking the deficiencies or revealing them in all their glory. The rCube is so good at revealing detail that you may be shocked to hear distortion in sharp transients rearing their ugly head - not a fault of course of the rCube. Your only recourse is to rip your files using Apple Lossless format to at least minimise any further degradation and maybe to reduce the level of some troublesome clipped files first by at least -3dB before importing into iTunes.

Another factor I have found very important is the placement of the rCube. Although you are actively encouraged to place it near a corner you may well have to experiment with placement as this will affect the overall sound considerably - and in some instances will sound distinctly mediocre, and at nearly £500 mediocre should not enter the vocabulary. My first placement was on a sturdy wood cabinet 60cm from the corner of the room wall.

Update April 2014: The rWand+ and rWave wireless dongles have been discontinued for a few months by Arcam and now the rCube itself has just ceased production. The Kleer wireless dongles were the prime reason for buying this rCube system and the rCube itself sports the largely obsolete Apple 30pin connector, although you can use it with the latest Apple iPod Classic as is and possibly later iPod/iPhones via the Apple Lightning adaptor, plus there's the headphone out cable connection option. Apparently plans to introduce a Blue-tooth and Apple Air wireless version of the rCube were shelved as it was too expensive to produce. It does mean the rCube is on offer heavily discounted at the moment though, and it sounds as good as ever, so it's still well worth a look if you have your music stored on the current iPod Classic. As the rCube's 30pin dock is powered, I also use the rCube's dock to run a wireless Cabstone Bluetooth Audio Receiver and although it isn't quite a match for the rWand & rWave's Kleer WiFi audio quality, it still sounds pretty good and pairs up perfectly with our Blue-tooth Hudl, Hudl 2, iPad and Nexus 7 tablets and is fine for tablet movie soundtracks, internet streaming and the like.
--------------------------------------------------------------

My main HiFi system is Arcam based, but that's rarely used as it's in with the main family TV and having my entire music collection on an iPod 160Gb Classic is easier than rummaging through piles of CDs. So I bought the rCube, after comparisons with the B&W Zeppelin. My first rCube landed with crippling WiFi fault [no remote working and 2 feet range on the rWand, might as well use a cable].

Excellent build quality and design. Soundstage is amazing when positioned correctly however it is not always possible to place the unit in a corner or recess. The overall sound is very good although as reviewed elsewhere it is best played "loud" and in a corner. Vocals are sometimes masked or recessed back into the mix. Sometimes the sound is not as integrated as it should be with bass lines and intricate treble unnaturally some way apart in the mix.
Hey this is now a bargain compared to the overpriced B&W units. Looks good and sounds as good ad it looks!!!

Had my rcube for about 16 months, a few weeks ago the touch control panel on the unit stopped working then the internal battery packed up. Then i could"nt get it out of standby thereby making it unplayable.I took it back to the hifi shop i got it from and they were more than helpful. It was still under warranty so thankfully did,nt cost me anything. Arcam replaced the internal battery and fixed the faults. This has,nt put me off the rcube. When i was looking for an ipod dock 16 months i wanted a a physical dock for my ipod and not rely on airplay, i considered the b&w zeppelin which i had heard and was impressed with, but the price was more than i wanted to pay (£500 at the time), i also considered phillips range of docks but could,nt find any to listen too before i bought them.I got the rcube for £300 plus they threw in the rwand as well so i get the convenience of wireless and also docking. The sound is excellent considering it is a box and no recesses for the speakers like other units.Arcam don,t make the rcube anymore but you can pick it up on amazon for £230, so well worth it. Go for the the rwand as well if you can (note: 30 pin connection) . Well done Arcam. Recommended. Update October 2015, it now looks as if the internal battery has packed up again, even when the unit has been connected to the mains for long period of time. When you you unplug the unit and try and use the unit on battery power alone, it stops working. I"m hoping this will rectify itself in time, but i'"m not too hopeful as this has being going on for about a month now. It will still work when the iPod is docked but i"m half expecting that to pack up too.Shame as this has been a good product up til now.
