One of the greatest epic poems of the Spanish conquest of America depicting the indigenous Mapuche tribe of Chile (known by the spanish as the Araucanians) in their fight for their land.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un clasico de la literatura española 13 April 2014
By Antonio Torres Román - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase

1.0 out of 5 stars Never got it 29 Jun. 2012
By Jay Dog - Published on Amazon.com

Amazon says it should be in my archived, the only thing I got in archives was some spanish dictionaries. I did all the trouble shooting I was supposed to do, and still didn't get the poem.

1.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this item!! 18 Jun. 2013
By hokuros - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is one of many texts offered by Amazon which are crudely copied and bound and sold for less money than genuine editions of the same works. It's only possible because the copyrights on the works have lapsed, allowing unscrupulous schemers to exploit unwary readers. Many of these offprints have missing pages and unreadable sections, with the kind of gross errors that wouldn't pass elementary school standards. Their only purpose is to make a quick and fraudulent dollar. This particular work, La Araucana, has never been out of print since the 1600s!! The idea of describing the text offered here as an effort to save great literature is entirely false and despicable. Amazon itself is only slightly less odious than these "publishers" in allowing them to use this website in order to perpetrate their fraud.

Buy the beautiful, reasonably priced Catedra edition of La Araucana, which in addition to a beautifully produced text has wonderful notes that add considerably to the poem.

4.0 out of 5 stars A treasure of Spanish Epic Literature 6 May 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is a real thriller. It is a first person account ( 1540) , in verse of the clash of two brave armies in Chile: the Spanish Conquistadores lead by Valdivia and the araucan indians lead by Caupolican. The narrativa takes you to the battle field that saw these daring armies engage in mortal combat. The strategies displayed by both sides has chilling resemblance, in military maneuvers to the US Civil War battles. The Spanish Armies with support of cavalry and artillery, confronted the Arauco indian with larger numbers. The Arauco Senate composed of 136 indians chiefs stages ardent nationalist debates on strategy and principles of War. Finally, the clashes in hand to hand combat wich often left thousands of casualties in both sides during the constant siege to spanish armies. Dialogs with vibrant passion, daring bravery and sense of honor bring the protagonists back to life. A must read
