While this future history of a Nature Preserve writ large is a fairly simple plot, it finds its place in the list of classics because of the sheer quality of the writing and the "otherness" it conveys. By following the ordinary lives of the protagonists without emphasis or strain, the strange and the different come to seem normal. The style of prose is almost quaintly old-fashioned, but rolls along so effortlessly and with such elegance, the reader ceases to notice, simply enjoying the sumptuousness of the dialogue.
This is the first part in the trilogy and leaves the reader looking forward expectantly to the next installment.
Funny, imaginative, gripping - the first part of a trilogy; a clever satire of an invented society; a piece compelling detective fiction.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who hadn't tried Vance already and decided they liked him, but it may will be my favourite of his books that I have read so far.
