Schulze analyses the dynamics of the violence and explores the numerous attempts at resolving the conflict. Kirsten E. Schulze is senior lecturer in the Department of International History at the London School of Economics. Her recent publications include Israel’s Covert Diplomacy in Lebanon (1997) and The Jews of Lebanon: Between Coexistence and Conflict (2004) as well as articles on Israeli-Lebanese relations in the 1950s, Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon, and the al-Aqsa Intifada.

Dr Schulze has penned an excellent account of the history of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. She has managed to masterly compress such a detailed subject into an easy and short read. Unlike many books on the Arab-Israeli Conflict, which contain an abundance of bias towards one side, Dr Schulze has written a balanced and succinct account from an objective perspective. Anyone new and/or interested in this protracted conflict must add this book to their reading list.

This is a very thorough, well-researched and impartial book on a very delicate topic and as a teacher I have found it an outstanding resource in terms of my lesson preparation. At the same time, this series is primarily aimed at the undergraduate market and as a classroom teacher, my A-Level / IB History students found it quite hard work due to what they found to be too many distracting academic references in the form of [Smith 1997, page 2] for even very straightforward statements about the topic. As a core text I therefore use the Scott-Baumann book from the "Access to History" series, and then complement it with this book for extension activities. The two books together work very well.

Format: Paperback
I used this book for my A2 history coursework on the Middle East conflict. I found it a very good basis for me to gain understanding of the mains events of the period before doing further reading for more depth. The inclusion of primary documents in the back of the book was also highly helpful to quote from in my essays.
