The Approval of Sheep Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Gordon Slee fears he was never meant to be born. Anxious since childhood after hearing he was an accident, the forty-two-year-old is still struggling to escape the shadow of his high-achieving family.
But a glimmer of hope is on the horizon - a huge promotion within his hotel group is up for grabs, and he is sure that his time has come to make a mark on the world.
However, within his own department, redundancies are afoot. He may lose his job before he gets the chance. Until he learns of a historic covenant that preserves the right for sheep to run through the company's top London hotel. Could he convince his boss that he's the man to save the hotel from catastrophe?
Up in Bryn Nefyn, North Wales, live the descendants of the covenant owner. The elderly sheep farmer and his aging hippy brother could use the money the hotel might offer. But along with their strong-willed American shepherdess, they laugh at Gordon's attempts to negotiate a deal. Surely, they couldn't use a covenant that's been forgotten about for over a hundred years.
Or could they?
For lovers of upmarket commercial fiction with a touch of romance and comedy, The Approval of Sheep is an uplifting story about family and love, overcoming adversity and discovering our reason for our place in this world.

A sparkling debut

A sparkling debut
In the beginning, I did not know what to make of Gorden Slee, who was seemingly burdened by all the cares in the world and tormented by the knowledge that not only did he not belong in this world, but he was also never meant to be here in the first place. Therefore, I was intrigued to see how he handled the opportunity to stave off his own redundancy, win the approval of his high-achieving family, and get the promotion he feels is his due. Sounds simple. doesn’t it? However, to achieve all the above, he must travel to Wales to meet the family who hold a historic covenant that allows them to ‘run sheep’ through his company’s up-market hotel. For me, the story came to life when ‘duck out of water’ Gordon arrives in North Wales and meets an eccentric cast of characters: a shepherdess from upstate New York who is a smart cookie, a hippy farmer who reads haikus to the magpies on the farmhouse roof and an elderly farmer grieving his lost partner. Then there’s the sheep . . . my husband’s family has farmed sheep since before the war, and there’s not much I do not know about them! Therefore, I must congratulate the author not only on her knowledge of sheep husbandry but also on how she handles the themes in the book and brings them to a satisfying, well-crafted conclusion. I am intrigued to see what she might write next . . .

With a title mentioning sheep I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into - but what a delightful surprise! While sheep certainly feature, the real hook is the plot and pace, which grab you right from the start. I found myself eager to return to the story and catch up with the characters.

It’s not the sort of book I’d usually pick from a list, but I’m so glad I did. This is the kind of novel that’s perfect to take on holiday or enjoy curled up by the fire, letting yourself be carried away by the twists and turns. At times I found myself quickly switching between liking and disliking different characters which only made the journey more engaging.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but if you’re after an absorbing, well-paced, story with plenty of surprises then this little gem is one I’d highly recommend!

I was thrilled to finally get to read Karen Storey’s debut novel, and just like her short stories, it’s full of character and life with elegant and humorous writing. It was worth waiting for!

I was intrigued from page 1, wondering how things were going to play out for the characters. I found myself thinking early on ‘that escalated quickly’ and that feeling kept coming. There’s a range of rich characters who experience the rollercoaster of life’s emotions, including lots of fun, and the comparison of life between a North Wales sheep farm and London city life is well detailed.

In troubling times and with the dark nights of winter ahead, this is just the tonic: A fun and witty read that I would highly recommend.

This story is so different, it kept me entertained. I loved all the characters, Gordon, Jenna, Alan. Even Rhys, who wound me up at times, but that added to my engagement with the story. All in all, great fun, with some touching moments as well. For a debut novel, I predict good things for this novel.

Thank you @rararesources for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. I love the front cover with the sheep he is very cute. Approval of the sheep is a literal fiction. I like the characters especially Gordon and his sheep they were very interesting and fascinating to follow throughout the book. I struggled at the beginning to get into the book but as I carried on reading, I got into it I'm really enjoyed the story. This is a heartwarming read that will make you laughing places. If you love sheep this book is for you so feel good read. I loved where the book was set and it was a pleasure to read something completely different from what I normally read and that has a completely different plot too. Very well written. Four stars.

A book that stays with you. I found myself rooting for Gordon, the Priddys, and even the sheep! The story was heartwarming, poignant, yet funny too. I loved the rural Welsh setting and the contrast with Gordon’s London life. The characters were well developed. It’s the sort of novel where you start to miss them when you’ve finished reading the book.
