This book seems to be one of the few which deal with sound editing using Apple Sound Track Pro. With the proviso that no single book can teach everything, perhaps my own experiences might be of use as follows?

The book is well laid out but the accompanying DVD is incredibly confusing.

As an independent video producer with considerable experience of music recording, photography and video production, I am not a beginner but bought this book to learn some specific techniques for STP. The written content is very good but the lessons DVD which comes in the back of the book is incredibly confusing. As you need the DVD to make full use of the book the whole experience becomes an exercise in frustration and time-wasting. Another reviewer said that he bought the book for Kindle but that it didn't come with the DVD lessons. That is a very good point but I'm not sure which is worse, having the DVD or not having it.

When loading the DVD onto your computer to use the training files, some of the links between their FCP project files and their associated media files may become broken (the book admits this in the preface). This means that you will have to relink them. The actual typography and layout of the written instructions for doing this are poor and confusing. The instructions do work but they are not clearly written in a step-by-step way. You may also have to set a FCP Scratch Disc for these lessons to work. All of this is likely to cause confusion for a beginner (or anyone, for that matter!)

The DVD contains a folder called Lesson Files. Inside that folder are twelve other folders called Lesson 01, Lesson 02, Lesson 03 and so on. To avoid even more confusion, I suggest you only open and use one of these folders at a time.

For me sound editing is a fascinating part of film editing and any film even an amateur holiday film will benefit from some sound editing. If you own Final cut studio and need to understand the process of sound editing then this book will break down the barriers. In the first lesson I learnt how to clean noise from speech and get rid of that muffled background noise that ruins many amateur productions. There are clear explanations on how to use each of the features of Soundtrack Pro and how easy it is to roundtrip and update sound files between Final cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro while working in real time. There is a DVD at the back of the book which has lessons and media files to work through, the lessons go through each stage of isolating noise from the sound so you end up with a clean production. I have watched many utube videos on sound editing in Soundtrack Pro, but think this book has done a much better job helping me understanding the process of sound editing including choosing what tool to use and how to use them. I'm half way through this book right now and loving every minute of using it. I think a quick reference book on sound editing would be useful addition once this books contents have been worked through. If I have a gripe it would be that at over £30 it's a bit expensive, but having said that I'm certainly glad I bought it and am simply impressed with everything I have learnt so far. It's got to be a "must have" for sound editing in Final Cut Studio.

This is a well written book that clearly demonstrates the features of the program. It is a must buy for anyone who is new to final cut and wants to create great sounding audio.
I bought the kindle version. This was a mistake because all of the tutorials relate to included files from the supplied cover DVD. There is no warning about the need for the DVD on the kindle page.
If you want to get the best out of this book, buy the hard copy.
