I have owned my Macbook pro for a while now and I imagine many will now be looking at the most recently released variants of this machine. However, this still represents a fantastic piece of kit and is worthy of consideration if you are seeking such a product. Such is the quality of the beast, Apple haven't really upgraded the most recent variants to such a huge degree that they can justify the extra £800. Of course, many will want the most recent update. For more savvy punters, this is where it is at.

The build quality is staggering. It is, quite simply, the best laptop I have owned by a considerable distance. If Apple did build a car to this standard, it would never fall apart. The retina display is staggering. Crisp, clean and vibrant, it is easier on the eye than my office PC monitors and I have noticed a difference in whether or not my eyes feel as strained on days I am office based of using my Mac at home for work. The machine is fast too, the i7 is a good processor, easily munching through the tasks I set it. Video and photo editing are straightforward, especially with its pre-loaded software. Ok, it isn't as in-depth as a specifically dedicated program such as photoshop, but it is more than good enough for a casual user.

The processing power is complemented well by essentially two graphics processors. One an intel iris based system and the other a dedicated NVIDIA card. So, if you do want to play games, you can. The hard drive is solid state, very fast and my only quibble is that it isn't a big larger. But no worries. Hook it up via thunderbolt to an external hard drive (or USB) or get a time machine and back up to that via wi-fi and you have all the storage you need. I transferred 370gb of data via USB to such a device. It ploughed through it in a few minutes.

For years I have wondered what the fuss was about with Apple laptops but now I have come to see it for myself.

Before I state the good or the obvious that has been already stated, ill clarify a few things:

1) The model: I received US keyboard version with UK plug. A few have complained regarding this issue, I almost fell into the UK complaining psyche. But when I put my moaning attitude aside, something that we get hooked on without rationalising, I came to my senses and I saw the keyboard for what it was. It has minor differences which are not really noticeable unless you're extremely fussy or you have an extreme case OCD.
To my revelation, the US enter button and shift are more ergonomic, as you don't have to lift your hand to press it while typing, unlike the UK version I have been using forever. Programmers, the guys who create things that we end up using, prefer to use the US version, now I know why. Plus some other European counties share the same keyboard style? So why have it different? Well, It's the power of the pound and the import/export business to stop you buying it cheaper elsewhere.

The most important reason than made me overlook human nonsense was the savings! That leads me to the second point.

2) The Savings! Is it too good to be true? Thats what came to my mind when I opened the box. I'm sure that was the case with everyone. At one point I thought It could be an empty mental body or a refurbished model. However, the rapping calmed my nerves down. Yes I was the first to open this bad boy. What was more reassuring was that Apple confirmed that it was legit, with a years guaranteed with a confirmed purchase date. All I did was give in my serial number and then it was all registered to nobody but me.

Bought this from market place reseller Top Deals UK. Did some research on sellers since there have been a small number of reported problems with discounted macbooks. This was exactly as described - a new, sealed UK unit that registered with Apple OK.

I had done the usual looking around before buying this and I have only just got my hands on it. Immediate reactions are that it feels like a great build quality and the keyboard is really nice to use ( had some doubts when I tried display units on the high street but it is absolutely fine when you get one home - and I am used to Thinkpad keyboards ).

At the discounted price, I think this laptop is unbeatable. The only problem is that macbooks only comes with 1 yr warranty - I am not sure whether to buy the applecare 3 yr warranty yet. Macbooks have a reputation of longevity but there is a bit of me that thinks that Apple are being a bit mean here compared to, for example, Lenovo Thinkpads which come with a three year warranty plus optional extensions.

I was looking for a medium to high spec i7 laptop with a 15 inch screen ( HD or more ) with decent-ish discrete graphics for engineering use and the choice was between a used W530 or T530 or this macbook - at twice the price, even discounted. The lenovos feel far more robust and I have had 10 years experience of thinkpads. It seems obvious that I will have to be more careful with the macbook than I have with the thinkpads so I'll probably keep the macbook at home and take the T420 on the road.

My initial impressions are that screen and keyboard are really brilliant. I have used ibooks ( macos 7-8 ) and imacs before so the interface was familiar but even so I found it a cinch to set up and navigate around.
