Lack of ports on right side gives little disappointment in design.
The trackpad is probably my favourite feature of this laptop as it makes using it a breeze. On the odd occasion where I have to use another laptop it amazes me how much faster performing tasks is. The trackpad is very large and the gestures that you can perform on it are really useful. The force touch track pad feels just like I am clicking. After 30 minutes I was able to learn all the gestures and make full use of it. While it does look to be a little too large it has not been a problem while typing because I rarely touch it but if I do the palm rejection is spot on.
When choosing between buying this MacBook or the previous generation I skeptical about the keyboard. the few times I used the last MacBook Pro keyboard I really liked it and was worried that the short travel would put me off. The keyboard on this model is leaps and bounds better than anything I have used before (apart from perhaps my desktop keyboard, however for typing essays I much prefer this one) I am able to type incredibly fast due to the low travel. My only complaint with this keyboard is that it is quite loud, which can be slightly embarrassing in a quiet classroom when taking notes.
The webcam is not great but it is perfectly fine for FaceTime but it nothing compared to the front facing camera on a phone.Read more ›
I have owned and used many Macs over the years and am very much a fan.
I have 2 MacBooks and 2 iMacs. All have been great to set up and use from day 1.
My previous MacBook Pro died after 9 faultless years, so I bought this.
What a performance! It refused to stay attached to the house WiFi for more than a minute. Then it wouldn't take my backup from a time machine disk. Then it wouldn't finish initialising, saying it could go no further until it downloaded the latest iTunes (which it couldn't do due to internet access failure!). Then I restarted it and got the dreaded "?" symbol which basically means "Game Over" for the machine.
Since my last MacBook they have removed the DVD writer and the SD card reader, together with the RJ45 socket, video out and all the USB sockets. They have instead installed 2 USB-C sockets. So I can't reload anything from anywhere!
It would cost be £200 to replicate the sockets I used to have, which now have to be in the form of adapters!
What is Apple thinking?
As it is impossible to repair this machine myself, I returned it, as thankfully Amazon has such a great after sales policy.
I have now purchased a 2015 MacBook Pro from amazon, which worked perfectly out of the box and accepted my files and also has all the "missing" sockets.
Yes, it stays on the WiFi perfectly too!
I have since been told by an independent repairer that many new Macs are having problems due to them only connecting to the 5GHz part of home Wifi signals, which have a very short range.
Well done Apple - Microsoft must be laughing their socks off!
I almost forgot- they've also removed the great magnetic power connector that adds safety by disconnecting and falling away if you catch the wire on something!
The keyboard is butterfly 2.0, it has more travel and depth than the MacBook keyboard which were way too shallow for me and somewhat annoying.
The SSD is faster than a speeding bullet. I can boot up from entering my password in 15 seconds or so. I suspect with more updates this number should be reduced.
With regards to battery life, I'd say it's similar to previous gens. Bear in mind every person's uses are unique so your results may vary.
One con is that there is only one free USB C port if you're charging it and this can be quite annoying if you have too many peripherals. I can't fathom why Apple didn't just make the 13" models uniform and provide at least 4 for all models. Heck, even three would have been a lot better.
Overall I love it, it's a beautifully compact size but a nice weight, amazing screen, a lovely new colour and just a complete joy to use.
