I was surprised at just how heavy it was but personally I prefer a heavier laptop as it means that it is stronger and you feel like you have something other than a feather-weight which to be honest I would feel that it is very fragile. The keyboard is really very nice and the touchpad is big, double the size of my old Windows laptop. My only gripe with the bigger touchpad it makes typing awkward if you touch it as you find out that your place has moved! But that is easily over ridden to disable it and use your Apple cordless mouse or with the benefit of a small lead you can connect an ordinary mouse. I think the small connections are good but it means that you need to buy an additional lead in order to add things like a mouse, graphics tablet or even a memory stick, which is annoying. Although saying that the cable I purchased was a reasonable price.
I also purchased 16GB of RAM which is the maximum this will take annoyingly. After checking how to do this I had to purchase a special screwdriver but this is difficult as the only one I can find is too small! So until I can find this I can only give it a 4 Star rating. But aside from this I love my Macbook!
Something I was surprised about was that once you have set it up and personalised it you can then import your bookmarks and as you add new ones they update on my iMac too! Any passwords you have to do manually unless there is somewhere to do this like the bookmarks.
My overall impression is very positive and after having an iMac for the last 18 or so months after 25+ years with Windows, I am not looking back.
If you are looking for a laptop whether you have used a Mac before or not, I would highly recommend this!
= Keyboard: the new butterfly keyboard just needs getting used to, it's indeed a bit noisier and feels strange in beginning but nothing major.
+ Sound: I enjoy the new front facing speaker giving much more crisper sound without the need to turn up the volume.
= Ports: the lack of ports is not a problem for me, as a student, if in need just get a USB-C dongle.
- Trackpad: the new, larger trackpad is a minor nuisance, which I find to often sense my palm and two-finger click also gets hiccups - would've be better with the older, smaller touchpad.
= Performance: my only real issue with the laptop is that it can't play 1080p 60fps or higher YouTube video (via Chrome) without dropping frames, 4K 30fps is fine, but at 60fps it starts to lose frames, 4K60 doesn't play at all. The issue here is YouTube's video codec, which is VP9 and not as well supported by Intel's integrated graphics. However, I tested this with the most recent 2017 Macbook Pro model, with Intel 640, and it's still unable to play this type of video, so there's really nothing better yet :/
P.S. while I think 13" is a nice sweet spot between portability and display real estate, I regret not sizing-up and getting a 15" model which would give me a larger font size that is easier to see and videos would appear more immersive. However I also hate the new Touch Bar, so my only option would've been to get the previous generation which would have its share of cons.
wondering if used/reconditioned was sold as new.
Lack of ports on right side gives little disappointment in design.
