I'm a sucker for this film. I think I have bought every version of it over the years. I have enjoyed them all. So here I am now with "The Final Cut" - apparently the only cut Coppola is entirely satisfied with. Apparently he felt the Redux was a little too long winded. So what do you get with this version?

Well firstly, the 4K UHD is absolutely stunning. I must admit I wasn't entirely satisfied with how the bluray turned out visually but this version is impeccable. The detail is incredible but never looks too overbearing for it's age.

The main content changes to speak of are the helicopter scene with the Playmates (added in the Redux version) has gone. No biggie. However, the French plantation scene (also added in the Redux version) is present. Now for me, I would have preferred this had also been removed. I do recognise the the point of the scene and it does add a different narrative to the story but I grew up with the original cut and I've always found that scene a little laborious and superfluous to the needs of the story. Just my opinion. Willard still gets his surf board nicked.

The main appeal for me, despite the cut being not what I would have liked is the look of this film in UHD. It's nothing short of brilliant. However, if down the line Coppola wants to release the original theatrical version in UHD, I'll probably buy that too.

Apocalypse now is a powerful and engrossing film about the Vietnam war. The films central character Captain Willard is teamed up with a crew of four men sent on a special mission to assassinate a rogue U.S Army colonel. Willard and his crew travel by a heavily armed boat through the rivers leading through the country encountering attacks by both the Vietnamese and Americans. In one scene they stop at a military supply depot in the middle of the jungle which is lit up like a Christmas tree. They join other personal when the entertainment arrives in the form of a group of girls from playboy magazine arrive on stage and perform to Suzy Q by the doors for a few seconds until a stage invasion ends the show. One of the extra scenes involves them meeting a group of French soldiers and their families who deserted their army and country during the French involvement in Vietnam and stayed in Vietnam ,They are invited in for dinner and the war takes a back seat as the leader of the French group gives them 'words of wisdom'. After losing all but two of his crew Willard finally gets to the end of the river and encounters colonel Kurtz who initially keeps him prisoner and kills one of his crew to prevent a napalm attack. Kurtz lets him go and Willard 'completes his mission. The film whilst powerful is sometimes a bit difficult to follow as the film has a phycological sub plot. The one thing that disappointed me was the end credits which did not show Kurtz's temple being blown up which appears in other versions and is not available in the extras menu.

I don’t know why this film was is rated so highly, it may be well made and there is a good use of sets and locations. However the acting is dreadful, the story implausible and exaggerated. It’s long , it’s boring there any millions of better films out there.

It's been a long time since I revisited this film...having watched The Deer Hunter regitilized while in lock down it's hard to believe that this film of same age is of much superior visual quality. It is lengthy at just over 3 hours and F F Coppola did advise 2 hrs 33 mins but nevertheless the pure cruelty and irrational situation of war shows strongly in this dark Vietnam war movie. Robert Duval was remarkable showing true grit to get a job done can't say that I liked or disliked his charicture but you do get the feeling you have met and seen this type of person before. Obviously, Martin Sheen had Herat attack in making this film and only 9 years later Charlie made Platoon which I have watched numerous times. I really enjoyed it, it upset me, provoked my concious, and I hope that we never get into the same situation in killing each other again for whatever the purpose is!

This particular steelbook edition of what I mean to refer has the normal edit and the redux and also has the heart of darkness documentary as well with some cool inside art designs alongside. Far out stuff totally.

The film is pretentious and, even worse, tedious (apart from the helicopter attack sequence, which provides a certain mindless excitement). As for Apocalypse Now Redux (i.e., the extended version), my advice is don't bother - it's even worse since it includes even more boring sequences which the director wisely omitted from the original version of the film. The documentary Hearts of Darkness, about the supposed rigours of making the film, adds little of interest if (like me) you are not persuaded of the merits of the film in the first place.

Sometimes the image says more than the word.
So said Alan Ginsberg around about the time this film is set.
It's a beautiful restoration, one that could only have been done by the director himself.
The softer chiaroscuro tones are certainly noticeable in this version.
Also, the balance between the soundtrack and the dialogue is almost perfect.

If this is the final version.
It deserves five stars..
