In many ways the film is reminiscent of Paranormal Activity, it's not as slick, but does have it's good points. It feels rawer and as such has a bit more impact. What it does lack is characters that you feel for. The dad and the daughter give it the old college try, but ultimately they fall flat.
What is does get right is the atmosphere. It feels claustrophobic and has a few creepy moments, making good use of the research team's equipment set up. It's not enough to save the film, but does stop it being a complete waste.
Overall it's ok, but nothing special.
So many ghost films are based upon an old creaky house, normally built on an ancient Indian burial ground or some other cliche. APARTMENT 143 offers something entirely different however, by basing it in an everyday apartment flat. It brings it home (especially if you live in a flat!). The characters involved in this intense poltergeist film, are excellent and very believable. Although the moody daughter can be a bit annoying at time, the dynamic of a single father, a cute kid, grumpy teenage and an incredibly violent and pervy ghost make for a terrifying film.
Highly recommended for film fans, especially as we approach Halloween. If you liked Paranormal Activity, then this is a must see!
Three ghost hunters investigate the bizarre events at the apartment of Alan White (Kai Lennox). Paul (Rick Gonzalez) is the technology guy and the one we have to blame for all the cameras. Ellen (Fiona Glascott) is the secretary and assistant but vastly prefers the title "gate keeper." The brains of the operation is Dr. Hezler (Michael O'Keefe). Alan has two children: Benjamin (Damian Roman) who is four and Caitlin (Gia Mantegna) who is at that difficult age. Caitlin has a very cold if not hateful relationship with her father, which immediately makes you think we are headed down the ghost/incest lane, something that has become too much of a substitution for good writing here of late.
The mother Cindy has passed on. They believe she is the haunting spirit. Caitlin blames her father for her death.
This production is subject to the same criticism of all found film productions. This one experiments with an idiotic head mounted camera that gives the film a "fish eye" view. The writing and acting were acceptable "B" grade fair. The scare factor was middle of the road. The main problem with this film is that we didn't get to feel for the characters. We got to know about them, but just didn't care.
PARENTAL GUIDE: F-bomb, no sex or nudity.
The funny thing is, since the hugely successful Paranormal Activity hit the scene, and the found footage style of films spilled like stagnant water all over the horror genre, almost nothing has managed to come close to the quality of PA.
If you like found footage films, and are the type to buy any entry into the genre, chances are you will enjoy this. It is no worse than many of the other turds that have been release in recent years, but it is certainly no better. There are enough 'shock' scenes to keep most fans of the genre happy, but if you are hoping for something a little different, then look elsewhere.

Another found footage style horror. Not scary and no surprises. Same old thing that has been done a thousand times.Published 7 months ago by Aspie girl.
Was considering purchasing this and then saw it on television. Some people would consider it frightening, but I got a little bored with it so I won't be purchasing the DVD.Published 10 months ago by Amazon Customer
