WOW!!! What a great read! Fantastic first up effort from a new author. This book rolls on at a cracking pace with action a plenty. Brilliant characters & a new hero to rival Jack Reacher, the Scarecrow & dare I say it 007. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down. Can't wait for the next installment. Definitely an author to watch for in the future. Unbelievable value for money at the price. Get one for yourself & send the link on to your mates, they'll thank you for it. Big thanks to Wyndham James for announcing himself onto the literary scene with a fabulous debut. We want more!

I enjoy this genre usually, but was a little disappointed with this, particularly after so many good reviews.

Now I'm no expert on the espionage world, but too many things happen in this book that had me thinking "surely that wouldn't happen". I know it's fiction, but surely there needs to be some link to realism. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't read it yet to explain what instances I speak of (and there are many).

Also little details matter....The GPMG is not .50 cal for example. Nitpicky of me I know, but if the author can't get the little easily researched details right, then what else is missed? :-(

If you like Chris Ryan's Strike Back, a bit of Bond or Andy McNab then Stricklan Vaughan will be right up your alley. The book is fast paced and makes you want to read more and more. Detail is good and the writing smooth although some of Jock's Glaswegian phonetics can be a little hard to follow if you struggle with accents. Personally I love it having read a bucket load of Brookmyer but it might not be some people's cup of tea.

All in all you would never now this was a debut novel and I hope there is a lot more Sticklan Vaughan to come. Bring on the action!

I was recommended "By Any Means" by a friend and after getting confused a little by that Charley bloke, I decided to give it a bash as it was rather cheap.

Well, what a pleasant surprise. The start was very well written and engaging straight away. I couldn't quite get the image of Daniel Craig out of my head every time the main protagonist, Strickland, was engaging in some daring do however, that didn't spoil it for me. It took a little getting used to of another of the main characters (Jock), and the way his speech was written but, that just made me warm to the character all the more. It did annoy my wife occasionally when reading a little out loud. You will see what I mean when you read the book.

The story starts off with you believing its your basic spy come arms dealer conspiracy but, along the way it takes a few unseen twists and turns which kept you guessing until towards the end.

All in all I highly recommend the book as it was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting read. It left me wanting to see more of Strickland and where he will go next...

Ok, I had misgivings before I read this book. Action spy thrillers are ten a penny, our national hero is James Bond for Gods sake, what more could this writer offer? It turns out quite a bit. James manages to refresh the genre whilst painting a vivid and exciting narrative, taking us though a roller coaster plot, constantly keeping the reader on the edge of his page.

Some of the characters could be seen as stereotypical, but this is easily forgiven as you instantly fall in love with their flaws, humour and catchphrases. The settings have an unlimited budget, creating cinematic images in the readers mind, hurtling towards a thrilling climax. If that wasn't enough, James manages to hold suspense, forcing the reader to trust nobody and question each character they meet.

If this doesn't become a series then it will be a tragedy. I have a feeling you will be hearing a lot more from Stricklan Vaughn. Be one for the first to discover him. it will be worth it.

To start with what a cover! It looks like a film poster! This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. It builds slowly but once it has you in it's grip you can't turn the pages fast enough. The author writes really well and the characters are well thought out. I did struggle a little with the dialect of Jock's speech but wouldn't let this put you off as there isn't a huge amount of it. The ending has left things open for a follow up and I hope this is the beginning of a series of Stricklan Vaughan novel's. South West London's answer to Bond? Yes but with less gadgets. Can't recommend highly enough.

Not like the usual crime thrillers I read, this book has classier edge to it, probably because - in my opinion - the British Secret Service are just that little bit darker than their counterparts across the pond. This book had me gripped from the beginning and the intricate details the author describes throughout makes it easy to picture the scenes (some pretty gory let me tell you!), the people and the [frequent] chaos/destruction created by the main characters (goodies and baddies alike!).

There are a lot of players in this book and it does take some concentration to keep up, but none are superfluous to the plot and each plays their part perfectly.

Body counts are high, destruction is unashamedly widespread but the main character is (mostly) cool as a cucumber throughout.
Great twists and makes you eager to get to the next chapter to see what comes next....

Am waiting patiently for the next book in the series.....please……?
