The book is an excellent description of how to apply the Buteyko Method and mindfulness for anxiety and a worrying mind. The accompanying CD is twenty minutes of Buteyko breathing combined with relaxation. Written with simple language in larger text and supported by high quality illustrations.
From the Author
My goal was to identify with the reader who is at the mercy of their own mind resulting in constant thinking, worrying, poor energy levels and concentration. This was relatively easy to do as it was my own personal experience for many years. I know what it is like to lie awake at night with my mind ruminating over yesterday's decisions and tomorrows fears. I personally understand how it disrupts sleep, affects mood, decreases energy and motivation. The book and CD contain the exact tools that I used to make a dramatic improvement to my health. Included is the Buteyko Breathing Method and five tools to quieten the mind and bring attention into the Now. The Buteyko breathing Method is explained simply and in good detail. Also included are references highlighting the link between overbreathing, blood vessel constriction and reduced oxygenation of the brain. I was accredited as a Buteyko practitioner by the late Dr Buteyko in 2002. Since then thousands of children and adults have attended my courses in Ireland and the USA. Those attending for panic attacks, depression, stress and anxiety made very good progress - hence this book. I truly hope that this book will bring you freedom from worry and anxiety.
This book is a very accesible approach to the extraordinary phenomenon of breathing less. As a long term meditator I found the softening of the breath to be a sign of peace. I was pleased to note this seemed to trigger a release from bodily discomfort or pain- most breathing exercises and indeed exercise made me anxious and increased pain in the long term. I could never work out why, or the connection with the workings of the mental processes. Patrick McKeown's book explians Buteyko's discoveries clearly and precisely but also illustrates how and why the mind is so relaxed and why this important. My advice to anyone who tries this is to stick with it. i bought the book three years ago and have read it many times. Patrick's descriptions are brilliant but the nature of what is being achieved was so illusive to me, only now am I getting the results anticipated. Healing from a book is never going to be as straightforward but this really is one of the best available in my opinion.
I already knew there is alot more to breathing and health and this book gets deep into the whole subject. Health benefits are already being felt just after a week. It presents an intelligent, expanded view of approaching daily life and if practised will lead to an enhanced happy and more peaceful feeling, enabling one to be more in control and let go of stressful effects on the mind and body. Keep it by your side as a practical reminder of a better way of living.
This book explains how to stop anxiety problems . Having suffered with anxiety problems for so many years and having tried so many treatments and therapies I only wish I had come across this book years ago . The exercises when repeated work instantly. In a nutshell I stopped taking big breaths and the anxiety stopped.
As a novice I found this book fat too technical and repetitive. If you want some concise tips on how to improve your breathing before looking into it further then look at Sally Gething's little book at a fraction of the price. I read it in a couple of hours and now I have a good basic understanding on the importance of correct breathing and how to achieve it.
