Product Description

Product Description

Anton Corbijn's prolific work has shaped the image of artists such as Joy Division, U2, Nirvana, Metallica, Depeche Mode and R.E.M. but what drives the photographer, filmmaker and video artist who has been hidden from the public for so long?

Inside Out explores Corbijn's persona, uncovering his motivation and inherent conflict as an artist, between audience's admiration and personal loneliness and the unique iconography he created. With critical and insightful interviews of artists like Bono, George Clooney, but most of all Corbijn himself, we follow him to his current and childhood homes, places of work, studio and film set to reveal the portrait of one of the most significant artists of post-modern pop culture.

A melancholy film, I thought. Corbijn comes across as a rather lonely man with little in his life other than his work. Even so, it's beautifully filmed and Corbijn discusses his work in an illuminating fashion. There are a range of brief interviews of Corbijn's subjects and family - the latter offer more of an insight into what makes Corbijn tick, although you wonder if anyone can really know such a guarded individual. A final warning: contains footage of Bono.

By tallmanbaby TOP 1000 REVIEWER on 25 Jun. 2016
Format: DVD
Anton Corbijn was one of the stars of the NME in the eighties, every week producing stunning and memorable images of the pop and rock stars, the chap from Aztec Camera on top of a beach hut, Tom Waits, Nick Cave. The strength and beauty of his photographs is at risk of overshadowing anything else he sets out to do, his films never quite live up to his best photos.

Often it seems as if a committed photographer insists on placing the camera between themselves and reality, capturing an image, but not really being willing to be present in the moment. Like a wedding photographer, there at the wedding, but not quite.

Although Corbijn is likeable enough, he is intensely private, and this is a rather glum affair. The frequent interviews with family and subjects help lighten the mood. This does give a real insight into how he works, but the glumness mean that you might not rush back to watch it again.

To some extent it may be easy to make a documentary of someone with such strong visual imagery. The documentary however goes much further to help us understand the artist behind these wonderful images. Inspiring to say the least
