Once again Vocalion have come up trumps with this CD featuring two albums that I had on vinyl back in the 60s. "Newley Recorded" amply demonstrates Newley's constant striving to be original and not pigeon-holed into any one category. Ranging from novelties like "Smile, darn ya,smile" and "All Together" through to classics like "I Have Dreamed" and "Old Devil Moon" this is a great showcase for the singer. The second album is the score from "The Roar Of The Greasepaint....." which Newley co-authored with Leslie Bricusse. All the songs benefit from Newley's unique interpretation ......some have become standards ("The Joker" ,"A Wonderful Day Like Today") but who would have guessed that "Feeling Good" would become the classic that it has? Everybody from Nina Simone to Michael Buble have had hits with it , and it seems to be almost obligatory for contestants on X Factor to have a crack at it. Newley's rendition eschews all the dramatics and remains the definitive version. This album clearly shows why Leslie Bricusse regarded Newley as Britain's greatest musical star..........and he was right !

A good representation of Newley's work on 'Newley Recorded' and a welcome return for the music of Newley and Bricusse from their show which included 'Who can I turn to?' The latter contains a number of what might now be considered to be 'standard' songs, but which come from this original show which was never very successful in the UK, 'The roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd'.. A great album.
