Product Description

Product Description

Derry's finest debuted in 1978 with Teenage Kicks, 2 minutes 23 seconds of immaculate guitar noise that has been covered (but never bettered) by everyone from Supergrass to K T Tunstall, Green Day to Busted. John Peel's `favourite record of all time' was followed by a dozen perfect pop singles including Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer, My Perfect Cousin and Wednesday Week. Four cracking albums showed a band prepared to take risks as punk morphed into new wave and on into electro pop and new romanticism. This Anthology showcases the very best of the Undertones and includes 27 previously unreleased demos, alternate takes, session and live tracks.

The first disc in this set is more or less a `Best of', but as Christopher has pointed out there's no copy of Get Over You. The order of the first disc seems bizarre, I prefer these collections to be in chronological order but even if some other criteria comes into play, surely you'd put Teenage Kicks first, or just possibly last to keep folks listening. Half way through seems a curious choice. The sound quality on this disc is excellent.

On the second disc we have a mixture of demo tracks, live and alternative recordings, again not in chronological order. Sound quality overall is ok; the 2nd Derry demo recordings are pretty poor and the EMI recordings are studio quality. There are some interesting rare songs and variations here but nothing that gave me a Eureka moment!

There doesn't seem to be a good `Best of' album available at the moment so this could be a good introduction to this fine band's early recordings. The long term fan probably has everything on disc one and so I can only see the really hardcore enthusiasts shelling out in order to get the rare stuff on disc two.

Had I thought about it, and reviewed the albums I've already got then I probably wouldn't have bought this, it was very much an impulse purchase; but I don't seriously regret it.

I recently had an Undertones party at my house and was pleased to give this record a spin for the guests. Although I have the originals all stacked up on vinyl, it was a treat to hear these little beauties once again, although without the pain of having to change the records every 20 mins or so. The Undertones were always the prime architects of the 3 minute punk/pop song and the first two albums are well represented here. Seeing as how most of these songs are years old it was encouraging to discover that they have not aged too badly - although that may be because I still like punk. The sound quality of the extra tracks is really good, even on the old demos and it was great hearing the live version of Mars Bars - including the Feargal slip up half-way through. Unlike some of their fans I enjoyed their 3rd album and even liked The Love Parade. Sadly that was their last great record as The Sin of Pride album took them away from the ethos that made them great and lead onto the solo career that Feargal enjoyed. So, in short, even if you have these old songs it is worth buying this, just to hear the rawer, more punky, versions of the songs that defined the Irish punk scene.

About time too. If you only know Teenage Kicks you're in for a treat. Looks like all the classic hits are here - My Perfect Cousin, Jimmy Jimmy, Here Comes The Summer, Wednesday Week - plus fan favourites like When Saturday Comes and Mars Bar and an unbelievable 27 bonus tracks. Compared to so many dull indie bands these days the Undertones really rocked and in Feargal Sharkey had one of the most incredible front men ever. Know what I'll be listening to for the rest of the year!

This is clearly an indispensible release for anyone with fond memories of Derry's finest. Beautifully packaged and including much unreleased material.
BUT... where is second (and some say finest) single Get Over You?? There's a demo version on the bonus disc but not the original single!

HASH(0x94090630) out of 5 stars I need a Mars Bar! 29 Oct. 2010

For a few years I have been looking for a decent price on an Undertones CD. While yes I would have liked to get their first CD but it is currently out of print. But this is a great collection. It has all the songs a Undertones collection should have. Not to mention a second disc of live, rare and demo tracks. The booklet is also amazingly well put together. The liner notes are by members of the band. Great collection!

HASH(0x9441f918) out of 5 stars 'Immaculate Guitar Noise' & Family Entertainment! 23 Oct. 2015
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com

This is a terrific compilation, not only for those listeners who are new to the music of The Undertones, but for longtime fans too. As noted in Amazon's main review, first disc of this 2-CD set is pretty much a "Best Of' collection with 29 tracks, ranging from what the label calls the "immaculate guitar noise" of early singles such as "Teenage Kicks" and "Here Comes the Summer" to more complex pop and rock songs like "Julie Ocean" and "It's Going to Happen." Man, listening to these gems again after all these years, brings a big smile to my face.

The second disc consists of previously unreleased tracks, including a bunch of live recordings, some demos, rehearsals, and "rough mixes." And be forewarned; some of these rarities are indeed quite "rough" in sound quality. From what it says in the liner notes, the band's manager found a lot of these unreleased tracks "mainly from old cassettes", so remastered jewels they are not. But hey, I don't think the Undertones ever set out to make pristine audiophile quality records, so the rough nature of some of the tracks on Disc 2 is not a big distraction, at least not for me. Instead, those hallmark qualities that made the Undertones so charming are fully intact; short, catchy songs packed with hooks and unbridled energy. Call it pop-punk, power-pop, or whatever, it's just fun and uplifting music that still holds up after all these years.

The CD set comes with an equally impressive 32-page booklet that is packed with information about the band's early days, recording history, and tours. The track listings include song times, songwriting credits, and recording dates. An extremely well done compilation from a band should should be MUCH better known and loved. Never too late to discover this musical magic!
