AT THE DRIVE-IN Anthology: The Station Is Non-Operational (2005 UK Special Limited Edition 2-disc album set comprising 18-track CD album featuring the definitive collection of their music including rare tracks cover versions and a recording fromtheir first Lamacq session plus a BONUS DVD including the One Armed Scissor Invalid Litter Dept Metronome Arthritis music videos and Operations Manuel EPK. Complete with accompanying booklet containing 20 unreleased photographsfrom the At The Drive-In archive!)
That At the Drive-In never conquered the world is one of musics biggest losses. As heavy, inventive, melodic and addictive as (but more energetic than) their contemporaries, The Queens of the Stone Age, and better than the rash of horrific emo-core bands that followed their template, ATD-I deserved more than their fleeting moment in the spotlight.
Nonetheless, such is life. With luck, This Station Is Non-Operational will convert a few more folks to their trailblazing ways. With a limited output (three proper albums and a few EP tracks), this 18 track compilation cherry picks the best bits of their past (though only three from their masterpiece Relationship Of Command), and includes rarities, Radio One sessions and choice B-sides ("Incetardis")- just about everything the educated or curious investigator needs.
As such, it traces the development of the band from an above-average RATM-style band to something inventive, original and groundbreaking. The only time the band come a cropper is on their well meant and appropriate covers; singer Cedric Bixler cant quite recreate one of Morrisseys finest performances. On their own material, however, they are pioneers. Spread the word. --Thom Allott
Top customer reviews
The anthology starts strong with the track Fahrenheit winding through most of the best ATDI tracks such as 198d and one armed scissor to a smiths cover of this night has opened my eyes to a strong ending with the Pink Floyd cover of take up thy stethoscope and walk.
You may think 18 tracks of pure bliss is enough but they have incorporated a DVD with 3 music videos, bonus ATDI footage, discography and extras for your computer.
For the price I would recommend this for new ATDI fans as there are some great tracks on there but id also recommend buying relationship of command too. Then buy all there other albums.
This Anthology will stay in your CD player for quite some time.
Buy and enjoy
The bonus tracks on offer here are a mix of b-sides, radio sessions and odd tracks from split eps. The 5 original tracks again are of the highest quality, but the Smiths and Pink Floyd covers are under whelming, and the remix of Rascuache is somewhat pointless.
The DVD is good in what it shows (3 videos and a press release), but considering what an incendiary live act ATD-I were, it would have been quite nice to have a couple of live performances on here (perhaps even that nigh on legendary rendition of One Armed Scissor from Later...)
