Hanson's sixth studio album is most definitely what most of the band's detractors would not expect to hear.
Already from its title - 'Anthem' - it promises a lot in one word: lyrics that command to be chanted; a chorus for crowds to sing along to, and songs that will release your inner hooligan and make you want to pump your fist in pure rock'n'roll-induced rebellion.

`Anthem' delivers on that promise. The album opens with `Fired Up', a funky tune that kicks off with an infectious guitar riff and that is guaranteed to be the next tour's shows opener. `Come with us if you want to live' is an already much quoted and somewhat notorious line, and one that already sums up the band's lack of self-censorship when it comes to making big, bold statements that other artists would shy away from in the name of `cool' preservation.

The style changes with `I've Got Soul' - a track so blatant in its James Brown influences that one might want to use the word `homage' or `rip-off' interchangeably. Things change with track 3, however, introducing the most aptly titled song of the whole album: You Can't Stop Us Now - a `We Will Rock You' inspired feet-stomper in which the three brothers share the lead vocals and which may challenge any preconceived ideas about the kind of songs that Hanson actually write.

`Get The Girl Back' is the current single and, strangely, the song that seems to fit the least within the album's rock'n'roll sound; luckily `Juliet', a Beatles-esque, Shakespeare- themed ditty raises the bar again with drummer Zac Hanson's powerful vocals. The real punch in the stomach, however, comes with `Already Home' - a song that truly encapsulates the concept of Anthem's big, layered, Joshua Tree-era U2 inspired sound.

I have been a fan of these guys for years. This is their best album to date, it is different, edgy and there are a lot of emotions running high through out the album. Anthem has a real kick to it which could attract new fans as well as old ones. Even if you don't like Hanson give it a try you may be pleasantly surprised.

This is a good album and I feel much better than Shout It Out their previous but even as a long term fan this album like their previous is a grower rather than an instant hit for me anyway.

For me favourites are: fired up, ive got soul, already home, for your love, lost without you and tragic symphony.

The lead single Get The Girl Back doesnt seem to fit on the album as it just seems a bit to much SIO style. I also think the order of the songs dont fit completely together.

Overall a good album that is worth buying that grows better with each listen.

Album 7.5/10

I've been meaning to review this album for a while but it didn't grab me the first few times I listened to it, and I found it hard to muster the energy to put a review together.

I'm a very big Hanson fan and I'd been expecting big things of this album - I'd read that it was going to be guitar driven which was great news for me as their last guitar-driven album (The Walk) is my favourite Hanson album by a mile.

Unfortunately, first impressions of this album were quite poor. Given the tendency for bands to front-load the running order of an album with its biggest & best songs I was in shock to find that I could (and still do) quite happily skip the first 3 songs. I was expecting to be hit by typical rousing & melodic Hanson tunes...but for me, these are b-side quality at best.

I can also take or leave track 4 as well (Get the The Girl back) - the blues-y sound isn't really my bag and the song probably belongs on the last album (Shout it out). Having said that it's the best of the opening four songs by far.

Thankfully, I found that things improved from track 5 onwards!

Juliet is like a breath of fresh air compared to what preceded and with it comes that familiar feel-good Hanson vibe.

Already Home is decent enough and
For Your Love is a pleasant, if unspectacular, ballad that is the mid-way point. Lost Without You is a solid tune and keeps things ticking over nicely.

Cut Right Through Me is another average tune but, praise be, we now come to the strongest third of the album!

Scream And Be Free lives up to the album name and is a great anthem. This is followed by Tragic Symphony, which is a decent enough up tempo number. Tonight builds nicely and ends up with a rousing finale.

The new soundtrack to your summer, 'Anthem' is nothing short of musical genius. Rockier, guitar driven, aggressive, but soulful & introspective, this is by far the greatest album Hanson have produced to date. Well worth a listen.

Listened to this a couple of times on the way to Manchester to see them play live, and now my mind goes back to that awesome evening every time I hear the opening track. A fantastic collection of songs - you know it's good when you don't skip any of the tracks! I'd heard a couple of their albums previously, so I knew their harmonies were good, but this excelled my expectations. Here's hoping they return to the UK in the not-too-distant future!
