4.0 out of 5 stars On Another Planet would make a lively book club discussion. 8 July 2014

I sometimes choose to read genre I’m not normally drawn to explore an issue or a theme in a different light. Sex is a hot topic in two senses of the word. It can be written to titillate. I’m not interested in that. Or, it can be presented as a serious topic worth exploring because of its impact on individuals and culture. T. A. Munroe does an excellent job of exploring some of the issues.
In addition to her painful past, what seems to plague Lily is her inability to reconcile a faith that has always been a list of dos and don’ts with her desire for a loving sexual relationship. I will admit to becoming annoyed with her for her fixation on Charlie, but like the author says, R is for Realistic and it is that.

The plot line about Lily’s rise in Hollywood is engaging. I loved the “behind the scenes” look at how films get made and the growing trust between Lily and Emily.

I struggled with my distaste for a culture in which people view each other as meat. Lily struggles as well. If she can find her way past a set of rules to a deeper relationship with a good God, she’ll find gold. I hope she does.

On Another Planet would make a lively book club discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling characters that I cared about. 5 Mar. 2012

Although this is not the usual genre I read, I was pleasantly surprised to find really well-developed characters who display depth and process and growth. Their conversations are believable and their development makes it a fast, easy, and compelling read. I found that I cared about the characters, particularly Lily and Charlie, of course, and their decisions, but the sub-characters were substantive as well. I had personal and emotional responses - sometimes sympathy, sometimes frustration (at the character's choice, not the author's depiction) - to their situations and choices. While it seems like it's a lighter read, it really does get into some deeper issues and questions through the characters and plot, again, a pleasant surprise. The plot is not complicated and we all wish we could inherit millions and build a new life for ourselves, but there is more complexity than I expected, and it was woven together well. The cover says that it's "Lilyland Book 1" - I'm interested to see where the characters go from here.
4.0 out of 5 stars Lily quickly became a good friend. The characters were true to life 1 Mar. 2016

Lily quickly became a good friend. The characters were true to life, and the story was compelling. This novel never adheres to a "formula". Highly recommended!
4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Honest and Compelling 17 July 2012

This was a freebie from Goodreads FirstReads giveaways.

I loved this book. Ms. Munroe did an excellent job creating characters that were engaging and easy for the reader to love/hate. Yes, their experiences center around a darker subject (domestic violence and sexual addiction) but it was refreshing to see. She was not afraid to shy away from the harder subjects that people would like to forget about. I felt so much empathy for Lily as she dealt with the demons caused by her previous life. This is an excellent testament of hope for people who have been her place to show, regardless of the situation, it can get better and be better. There are Christian undertones and excerpts throughout the story but not excessively and always used to highlight Lily's journey from where she was to where she ended up.
I would have liked to have more detail about Charlie and what made him the way he was. His intense therapy and rehab are mentioned but not in much detail. Perhaps if there is a sequel that part of the storyline can be developed. There were also a few part of the story that seemed to drag a little for me but after a few pages it was over.
There were several times throughout the story that I found myself welling up with tears, wanting to shout at certain characters, or just to take them by the shoulders and shake them. To me, that makes for an excellent story.

Overall, an excellent read for anyone who's not afraid to recognize that all storys, people, characters and lives are not sunshine and roses.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lilyland Book 1 is a winner! Can't wait for Lilyland Book 2 16 Jun. 2014

To be honest, getting into the book was a little slow. But, wow, as I became acquainted with Ms Munroe's carefully crafted characters I was delightfully hooked. I became a willingly voyeuristic participant in Lily's life from her journey as abused wife to major movie director. The glamorous Hollywood movie scene with its inevitable partying, sex, betrayal and drama is engrossing. Lily's personal struggle to hold on to her self-esteem is inspiring. The challenges of life crises and the courageous love that can overcome rang true for me as a reader. I can hardly wait for Lilyland Book 2!

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for my honest review
