Product Description

Three-volume box set. In 'Anne of Green Gables: The Complete Story', Anne Shirley (Megan Fellows) is a young orphan adopted by bachelor farmer Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla. She endures many struggles as she makes the progression from adolescence to womanhood. In 'Anne of Green Gables: The Complete Sequel', Anne is now eighteen and teaching at Green Gables. When a position becomes available in Kingsport, she has to decide whether or not to leave her hometown. In 'Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story', Anne has only recently returned to Avonlea when her fiance, Gilbert, is offered a position at a hospital in New York and persuades her to move with him. The couple are unhappy in the metropolis, however, and make their way back to Prince Edward Island. The advent of war sees Gilbert enlisting as a medical officer, and when he is reported missing in action Anne braves the warfields of Europe to search for him.

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her", answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots", and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something". Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

As a teenager, I watched Anne of Green Gables and its subsequent sequel on television with my family. It remains one of the few stories which transcends age, gender and background, and I have yet to meet someone who did not feel a little sad to see the back of Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe. (Even my dad and my husband enjoyed it!)
This series captures the heart and soul of LM Montgomery's books, which I recently read and enjoyed immensely. Imagine my delight then, when I discovered that there was a third part I had yet to view. Then imagine my disappointment when I watched this third instalment. Although much of the original cast are present, there the similarity ends. The characters are all changed beyond belief, similar neither to their literary counterparts in Montgomery's books, nor to the previous incarnations in the first two parts of the trilogy. It is a real let down, and I doubt I shall watch the third instalment again. I cannot understand why the director Kevin Sullivan felt the need invent something so completely different to LM Montgomery's original creation. There are plenty of lovely stories in the Anne books which he chose not to film. A great shame and a missed opportunity.
Overall, this is still a great buy. The first two videos are fantastic, and something that you can truly watch and enjoy again and again. If you have never seen this adaptation before, take a chance - you won't regret it.

This magical video charts the life of the orphan Anne Shirley who changes the lives of all those she meets. With a backdrop of Prince Edward Island(Canada)this is a must see. Megan Fellowes transforms the character from the young ideological schoolgirl to a woman of substance.

I first watched the tape when i was 10 when my grandmother came round with the recording. I loved it. It was brilliant. Anne is and orphan girl who is always getting into trouble or "scrapes" as ahe calls them. Together with her best friend Diana, Anne goes into the world headfirst and doesn't think much about the concequences. A very humorous story and good to watch with the family.

When I was young I use to read the Anne books over and over again, so when the videos were re-released I jumped at the chance of buying the whole trilogy. They are a must have for any fan young or old of the series, even if the third one doesn't exactly follow true to the plot (hence minus one star from perfection). The videos are a great way to introduce the series to anyone who has never read the books and is a wonderful way to fill in a Sunday afternoon, especially over the holidays.
