Annabelle Quennell is invited by her godmother - Lady Emmeline - to spend the season on London in the hope that she can find herself a rich husband and improve the family fortunes.

Annabelle doesn't realise at first that her godmother has her own ideas of precisely who would make her a suitable husband and it isn't someone with a fortune. In the meantime Annabelle is starting to wonder why Lord Sylvester Varleigh keeps turning up just when she needs rescuing from awkward situations.

I enjoyed this entertaining and light hearted Regency romance. There are plenty of less than perfect characters and some downright evil ones too. Annabelle has a mind of her own and Lady Emmeline is one of those indomitable middle aged lady whom this author portrays so well. Lady Jane, the villainess of the piece, is also well done.

If you want a light read which will make you smile then try this book - it will keep you occupied for an evening and is excellent accompanied by a glass of wine and some chocolate.

I really enjoy all of MC Beaton's books. Having gone through all the Hamish Macbeth (on Audible as well!) and Agatha Raisin I decided to start on her Regency and Edwardian novels. Yes, there are quite a few typos but nothing to detract from the storyline. I like a bit of escapism and these books fit the bill.

Any lover of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels will enjoy this frothy confection. Indeed, I gained a good deal of enjoyment in working out which Heyer books some of the plot elements derived from! On the other hand, Beaton shines a light on the sordid underbelly of the historical period, which Miss Heyer sometimes skates over. The plot is fairly predictable but there are some amusing and clever twists. All in all, a pleasant hour and a half of escapism.

I find most regency books are very much the same, a coming out by a reluctant debutante who dislikes her saviour on first meeting him then falls in love and all ends happily ever after. having said that I still enjoy reading them and M C Beaton is a good story teller, so take it as it is and enjoy the read

I thoroughly enjoy M C Beaton's books. The outcome is fairly predictable from an early stage in the book but how it is achieved gives insight into life in those days and there are lots of unexpected twists and turns along the way. A good book to relax with.

None of M C Beaton's novels are intellectually challenging and I don't mean that as an insult. They are, nevertheless, a pleasant read and if she has done her research as well as Georgette Heyer did, reading her novels is one way of learning about the social side of Regency England.

As an avid reader of M C Beaton books I was pleased to see a new series of her work. Annabelle is a lovely story of love lost and won in a bygone time. It tells of the difficulties and absurdities of life which also gives the reader an insight into the past.

Very MC Beaton, full of improbable coincidences but also a mine of information about society life two hundred years ago. Enjoyable romp through Annabelle's Season in the care of her eccentric godmother.
