I got this Power Port solar 21W solar panel for Christmas after asking for it. I was hoping to use it to keep my mobile (Samsung Galaxy S4) and Anker battery packs (Astro E7 and the New 2nd Gen Astro E7) charged while working at festivals in the UK. This panel has not lived up to my expectations.

Firstly while trying to work out how long it would take this panel to charge my phone, it seemed to cause my phone problems. The phone after 3 years of operating with no problems, started turning itself off and on again and never getting past the boot screen for longer than about 10 seconds. After doing some research on-line it seems that it is a bad idea to connect a device directly to the solar panel as the output is not constant enough unless you have bright sun and no clouds. I didn't know this and Anker do not make this clear anywhere. So phone dead and replaced I then move onto charging my Anker battery packs.

I asked Anker if the Power Port Solar will change the two packs mentioned above. Anker said 'Please be advised both of the Astro E7 and the newer higher capacity 2nd Gen model Anker Astro E7 require 2A input minimum. They (The battery packs) will not charge properly if you use a solar charger with a maximum output current smaller than 2A. To ensure best performance, we won't recommend you charge the batteries via the solar charger since it will only output 2.4A max when the sun light is really enough.' So in a nutshell, the Anker made Powerport Solar 21W will not charge the Anker Astro E7 and the New 2nd Gen Astro E7 but nowhere is this made clear anywhere. Do we as customers have to work all this stuff out our self before buying?

If we do have to work out what is compatible with what from the Anker range then at least give us the data needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, buy two if you can! 29 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase
I purchased this Anker 21W solar panel on the 21st Oct 2015. I didn't leave a review earlier because i like to properly test stuff and under various conditions because i want to learn the limits of it. All of the youtube videos I've seen of this, show testing in ideal full sunshine conditions, but for us here in the UK it's not like that all the time here.

Since the day this arrived, i have been using it on everything from charging AA/AAA batteries via USB charger to charging my mobile phone which i run dry by letting it run out of battery, then switching it on again just to get the last drop of power out of the battery so it never turns on again.
My findings are that this solar panel is a very nice bit of kit. Even in the low light of winter days, I got enough of a trickle charge out that i could easily send an emergancy text to someone with only a little bit of charge time. This is extremely important to outdoors types for obvious reasons.
This makes me feel safe that i can trust and rely on this bit of kit as a result, i wouldn't leave for a camping trip without this.

In regards to charging my AA/AAA batteries, importantly I've been saving some money by charging them with this, although I can't be sure of how much money is being saved. I'm just happier knowing I'm saving something on my electric bills!
I still have a mains battery charger though.

I also got a power bank along with this solar panel - (sorry Anker, but i chose another brand's 25600mAh battery bank, seeing as it was a comparable capacity while being a bit cheaper) - and even on poor light days, i can get a decent amount of charge into it with this solar panel, enough even to run my little 5W LED USB camp light for quite a while!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for cycling/camping 27 Aug. 2016
Verified Purchase
I took this on a 2 week cycling trip along the coast of Northern Spain in July. The panel was tied on top of the rear panniers to charge a battery pack as we cycled.

With 2 separate battery packs I was able to charge one and use the other. This gave us enough power to have GPS running on 2 iPhones all day as well as keeping the phones alive overnight when we didn't have access to power.

I didn't connect my phone directly to the panel so can't comment on how well this works, however we met some walkers who had a different brand of panel who said their phone didn't like the constant power fluctuations and that their phone had stopped charging.

The Anker panel was robust enough to withstand knocks and drops.

It would be helpful if Anker had marked which of the ports was the fast charge one. (Easily resolved with a marker pen. )
Having the Velcro along the full length of the pocket and a mesh liner in a section for cooling would be much better. The short section of Velcro isn't enough to keep your phone in the pocket securely.

I've tried using it at home in London, but not really worth the bother as you can more easily plug into the mains to charge.

I paid £50 for the 21W Anker solar panel in 2016.

2.0 out of 5 stars 21 watts is misleading 12 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase
I brough this since I already had an old 7w Portapow solar charger and while this has been great, I wanted a little more power to charge more devices when away from a power socket.

The Anker panel itself feels reasonable quality and generally I am satisfied, however, the reason for 2 stars is because of the claim that this is a 21w panel.

After taking a few measurements using a usb power monitor in different conditions and comparing between my 7 watt Portapow panel and this Anker 21 watt panel, you would expect this to perform around 3x better under similar conditions - it doesn't. It actually performs a little over double which indicates that this performs on par with a 15w solar charger. This makes sense when you compare the surface area of the solar panels. The total surface area on the portapow 7 watts is roughly 450cm2 (two panels of 12.5x18cm). The total surface area on the Anker is roughly 975cm2 (3 panels of 12.5x26cm) - so a little more than double. The Portapow claims roughly 64cm2 per 1 watt produced, Anker is claiming just 46cm2 (based on 21w) - but if you compare at 15w then the Anker shows 65cm2 per watt - similar solar panel efficiencies to the Portapow.

While I understand the various solar panel technologys offer different performance, if you actually look at the different solar technologies currently available and their efficiency the performances are relatively small and i don't believe big enough to justify a 30%+ increase as Anker are claiming.

So the conclusion is that Anker (and to be fair they are not the only manufacturer who does this) are being very misleading with their "21 watt" claim since in the real world 15w appears to be realistic.
