At first I thought I'd wasted my money as I still couldn't copy anything on to the card whilst using the Anker reader - got write protect error message. However a few minutes searching for this issue online provided me with the tip of "jiggling" the write protect slidey thingy on the card a few times. And lo and behold it worked, and I could copy photos onto the card. Very happy.
Build quality seems to be good.
My main use for this will be transferring 20mbps HD dash cam footage from previously mentioned 128GB (FAT32) MicroSD card to my laptop for review and editing. It also works with my Nexus 5 Android smartphone (running KitKat 4.4.4) using a USB-OTG cable and Chainfire's StickMount (v3.40) app. Since my phone does not have a MicroSD card slot, this allows me to review footage when out and about. It also allows me to transfer footage from my main 128GB card to my spare 16GB MicroSD card (in SD adapter). I can transfer footage directly from one card to the other, so, even if my phone memory is completely full, I can still move files between cards. This also saves on write cycles for my phones built-in flash memory (which is much more significant when moving larger files). It seems to consume very little battery power when in use, which is another bonus when using it in this way. The packaging box doubles up as a nice storage box for this device, my OTG cable and my memory cards, which can then all be thrown into a storage compartment in my car, without any of it getting lost.
The only thing you need to remember is to insert/remove cards when the device is unplugged from anything else, then connect to your PC/phone/tablet. If you need to swap cards again, unmount (StickMount) or 'Safely remove' (Windows), unplug from USB port, then swap cards, otherwise, you might run into problems. You also need to remember to unlock any card or MicroSD adapter you use, otherwise, (in my case anyway) you might not even be able to read the contents of your card.
The only other thing is, I find it difficult to remove from my laptop's USB port, possibly due to its shape. This can be cured by using a short USB extension cable or buying the newer version of this product, which already has a cable on it.
My only slight worry is that it runs hot. Not hot enough to fry an egg (it would have to be a very small egg, of course) but hot enough to think "hmmm, that's a bit hot." This makes me question its long-term reliability but, frankly, at this price long-term reliability is not really an issue.
Overall a great product.
I love the card reader as well as Anker itself and will continue to consider their products in the future and recommend to everyone!!
Going on holiday and want to take 50 GB of films? Well I hope you have 8 hours to copy that data over.
Just tested it pulling 20 GB off and then back on a micro SD card and it seems really fast.
Down faster than up which matches the spec of the card.
Overall really happy with the purchase, I mainly bought it as all the USB 3.0 micro SD readers looked a bit sketchy.
Anker are also on my highly trusted brands list. I have a 1st gen anker power bank that I love so much.
I am getting it's replacement for xmas and it will definitely be a 2nd gen anker power bank.
In use the device performs read/writes extremely quickly when used with class 10 media and a USB3 port - I haven't collated any metrics - but you won't be waiting around that's for sure !
The one thing I have found with it, is that it has two slots, and both slots are recognised as drives in Windows - I would of preferred it if only the slot that was used was recognised as a drive, but this is a minor point - it does what it says on the tin and works well.
