This book can be described in several ways there is a good half and a bad half.
The good half consists of showing you how to draw a few characters and some facts about anime art but the bad half about this book is that, yes it does show you how do draw a few characters but only the simple ones. The book does not tell you how to draw half the characters it shows it gives a bare minimum of the facts and techniques needed to create good anime. A poor attempt in my view.

This book is to put a word to it: poor.
I bought it expecting it show how to draw anime/manga characters in at least some detail. All it shows are a few simple characters, and then it goes into about different manga genres. It would be fine if it was meant to be a book dealing with the various types of anime/manga genres and explaining them in context, but it's supposed to be a book to help you learn how to draw this sort of artwork! Poor content and poor value.

I think that this book is good because it may not show you how to draw the characters shown but it does show you some of the cool designs that you yourself could come up with. Besides why be an artist if you just copy characters from books and I think that this book was written just to give you how to draw the characters bodies but then the facial features and clothes are up to you. on the whole I like this book

Where this book excels is in the information on the elements within anime. As a book covering info with some drawing how-to steps it is a decent book. It not however an overall book on drawing Japanese animation and was a bit basic for my classes (I teach concept art and comics) but was good as a general book. I do like the storyboards and would have liked more of these (possibly a link to online). One to read but not on the top of my list. I much prefer Manga Mania.

this and all the other christopher hart books are really really really really really really ----------bad!!!! because it is obiviouse that he is just a western style artist trying to do manga/anime! the proportions are bad too (some of the characters are skinny to the point of being non human!)he's got his facts strait but just not the drawing....the HTDM series is way better. but i wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

In fairness the other reviews would be corect in stating that a large portion of the pages are devoted to explanation of area and genre as opposed to straight forward instruction. Although, I personally feel, that this is very useful for gaining the feel of what you are trying to captue as an aspiring Manga artist. It is also a very clever marketing ploy. By not giving the purchaser/reader the full instructions they are left requiring other books in the series.
As a reader of the full series and an aspiring artist of great depths, I found even the one book by itself most helpful.
