Animal Invaders by Clive Roots should prove of interest to anyone concerned or simply curious about the spread , by man's agency ,across the globe of a surprising number of species . From the earliest times humans have been accompanied on perambulations and nautical journies by a variety of creatures which has led to the establishment of colonies of alien animals all over the world .
Whether from the feralisation of domestic animals , experiments in biological pest control, for sport, the carefree liberation of pets, the aesthetic release of exotic species or simply by accident few of these introductions have been without cost to local environments and indiginous wildlife.
The book provides an extensive list of sources to anyone who wishes to research the subject further . It is also of some historical interest, allowing the reader to compare the modern ecological status of various species and habitats with that of 1976 when the book was first published .
Touching as it does on the chequered history of so many species Animal Invaders should satisfy the interest of the casual reader and whet the appetite of the more serious student. The book provides an accessable insight into the often costly and unpredictable results of moving creatures from from their natural habitat and placing then in an alien environment .
