I was taught by the author and, far from having gone to a public school, he, like me, went to a grammar school. James' use of Latin phrases is no more than you would expect from anyone who did Latin "O" level in the 1960's. This is not high falutin or super academic; it is simply the level of education you were expected to attain if you went to a good grammar school in the 1960's.

As for the content of the book, yes, it is academic. What do you expect? It is written by one of the finest (some think the finest) Anglo-Saxon historians writing today. If you do not want to read an academic book then don't read this book! This seems very simple to me.

I am puzzled by what the previous reviewer expected from this book. For me it is a brilliant analysis of the Anglo-Saxon state. And, by the way, I am not an historian.

Borrowed this book. The introduction was more like a book in itself! Far too long. Am half way through it and whilst I am sure it is well researched, with pertinent information, it's not an easy read. I am not a historian but am very interested in Saxon times and thought this would give me a deeper insight into the political systems and organisation of the country at the time. Unfortunately, it is overly verbose and very annoying in its use of Latin phrases which the author uses frequently and refuses to include in translation, assuming the reader would have a degree in Latin. Surprisingly, some of us who didn't attend public school are interested in History. Obviously intended for 'academics', not to help a blonde Art teacher! but I will plough through it as it does hold valuable information about the Saxon times- just need to sit by a computer whilst reading and look up something every two sentences! Still wish I knew what 'de hoc suum testimonium adduxit de meliboribus et antiquis hominibus totius comitatus et hundred' meant....
