I liked this book so much when I read it that I bought two more copies for friends. An easy read full of deep history. Wow, what an unpleasant time it was after the invasion!

To have in my hands something which expresses the history of England, in the authentic voice of the people, is a real treasure to me. I began to read it, and thought - this is what they were saying, seeing, feeling. Now, getting over the excitement of looking through this book - it is a large edition, fully illustrated and annotated, a window on this bygone world.

Exactly what I say in the title of the review. Anyone wishing to understand the history of the period covered by the chronicles needs a reference copy and this is as good as any. Obviously any history of any period that is written contemporaneously needs to be read in line with other available evidence and the chronicles are no different.

This is an affordable addition to anyone's reference library.

Good if you are interested in the confusing times in that part of English history.
Most people have no clue what happened before the Normans took over in England.
