Some years ago I wrote reviews for all the Angelique books and I'm delighted to have the opportunity now to do this exercise all over again because I have just re-read all the books recently in Polish my second language.
Whereas "Ghosts" is the final book in the English translations -Heinneman's wrote to me and said they would not be "commissioning" any further translations due to lack of interest - I have now managed to read three more books following on from where "Ghosts" ends.
As afficianados may know, the ending of "Ghosts" is far from satisfctory as it merely sets the scene for an entrance into Quebec and an unravelling of all those mysterious little moments that are so beautifully woven into this book.
Dear reader you may wonder why this book has so few pages compared to its predecessors, and indeed if this were to be the final adventure, would you not expect some sort of conclusion? In actual fact - this book was to be part one of a greater creation - it was never meant to appear on its own and why is the translation of Complot des Ombres (Conspiracy of Shadows) so inaccurately translated as "Ghosts". Complot des Ombres is a most accurate description of this part of the book which should then have merged with the entrance into Quebec. And so I have no regrets in using "Ghosts" as a starter for this review which should be for the rest of the book. In Quebec the author, Anne Golon (now writing solo since the death of her husband Serge) brings back the decay of the Old World with a vengeance - she builds up the suspense surrounding Sebastian d'Orgeval (a Jesuit who really should have known better!

I was fortunate to obtain a second hand copy of this book from the USA. Having enjoyed all the other Angelique books with great pleasure, I found this one rather disappointing;the last few books have been a build-up to Angelique and Joffrey visiting Quebec with all its inherent dangers, and whilst this book continued to build up to this climax,it appeared to be cut short with only one 'ghost' materialising from Angeliques past.I felt very let down, then discovered that this book was only a part of the great denouement regarding Quebec; 3 further books have been written, I understand, tying everything up, but THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH! Other languages yes, so we are unable to read the final books which explain so much.
I find this very frustrating;perhaps the publishers should reconsider their decision, as ALL the Angelique books are a first rate read and un-put-downable.

Whilst I enjoyed reading this book, as I have all the Angelique books, it ended as though it had been cut short and left me feeling up in the air and vaguely unsatisfied. I have since learnt that there are three further Angelique books which have not been translated into English yet - WHY NOT? I feel positively aggrieved! There can never be another heroine like Angelique, and all the books are riveting and historically correct. What a wonderful way to learn history!

To me this one is one of the transitory books in the series, things happen, new characters are introduced or old ones resurface (again miraculously happening to "bump" into Angelique on the other side of Earth at the same exact location as her in the vastness of North America!), but events themselves are not significant on their own, but rather steps in setting a stage for the next level of drama that is yet to happen. As the Peyracs prepare to enter the French territory, i.e. effectively return to France, where the King's influence and decisions reign strong, Angelique is full of doubts and fears, facing all her actions and decisions of past life and wondering what consequences they'd amount to now so far away from France. She thought she left it all behind and had a new life, but it's all coming back to haunt her. Three more books that follow this one are not available in English. So apologies for any spoilers (alert!) for those wanting to know what actually happens after reading this book and being left in the dark right before Angelique enters Quebec, here's a quick snapshot of what's to follow in those 3 untranslated books: Angelique and Joffrey dazzle and conquer Quebec, making new friends and even succumbing to brief love affairs for each only to prove to themselves they only love each other, public pardon by the King reinstating to Peyrac's all their titles, castles and riches, decision to remain in North America and sending their 2 sons to France to enjoy the regained titles and place at court, birth of twins and a final triumph against her prominent Acadian adversaries. Of course, all those events spread across 3 books are heavily spiced by unexpected events and set backs, life threatening situations, war, starvation, near death and loss of children and timely help from friends, admirers and even enemies.
