Absolutely brilliant. This is an excellent piece of grunge, grindhouse cinema. Probably one of the few movies that rate at the high end of grindhouse cinema if you can believe that. It's dark, it's violent and, full of tough material and just like Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, you're with the main character all the way through. Despite the fact that what she does throuhgout it is morally questionable, you're still with her 100% of the way. You find yourself rooting for her all the time, and how that is, is down to good writting and directign. This is one of the best additions to Abel Ferrara's ouvre along with King of New York and Bad Leiutenant and one of my favourites of his, The Driller Killer. Infact due to the dark nature of this film, it wouldn't be highly inappropriate if the two main characters of The Driller Killer and Ms. 45 actually met each other at a cafe or a really run down scum ridden apartment block or something and caused havoc. This film can easilly be seen as a peice of feminist trash, what with a sole woman going around blowing the crap out of men, but so what. I say bring it on, it's about time we had something like this. I personally don't see any kind of vindictive feminism in it. I just see a character who has been screwed over horribly by people who just happen to be men, and she's pi###d off and wants to wreak havoc. I mean who hasn't felt the urge to do that once in a while. At the end of the day, this is a good addition to grindhouse trash cinema. It is the way it is, because it's meant to be that way - unforgiving, unflinching and unappologetic. The character in this film, to me, represents the dark side of humanity, she's the human personification of repressed anger and frustration and white hot hatred that finally explodes. This is one of Ferrara's best and if you've seen any of his work before then pick this one up and give it a day in court. I guarantee you'll not be disappointed. Thanks for reading. Adios

Abel Ferrara's dark 1981 New York set rape and revenge thriller Ms.45 makes its way onto DVD here completely uncut and uncensored on a region 2 import from France. For the record this import release is English friendly and features removable French subtitles. It is worth noting that there are a number of Korean DVDs of this movie available (with a pink and black cover art)but these contain only the cut version of the film and are best avoided. In the US a Blu ray presenting the uncut version has been made available from Drafthouse Films but unfortunately is region A locked.
Thana (Zoë Lund)is a young mute seamstress learning a trade at a small but busy fashion designers in New York. Despite being being loved by her fellow female colleagues, treated fairly by her boss and smothered by her nosey landlady, Thana lives a life mostly of solitude and naivety towards the world around her. One evening on her way home from work Thana is dragged into an alley by a masked assailant (actually director Abel Ferrara himself) and brutally raped. Left on the ground, bruised and dirty she pulls herself together and makes it home. Unfortunately for Thana her day is about to get far worse as she disturbs an intruder in her apartment. First he demands money but after seeing her ripped blouse and putting two and two together decides he wants abit of the action too. So for the second time poor Thana is raped at gun point. But this time the shy and naive girl is not going to take any more and snaps, grabbing a glass paperweight in the process and promptly smashing it over his head. She then finishes the job with her steam iron. Now the best thing she could have done next would have been to inform the police of her ordeal and claim it was self defence which judging by her character would have been accepted.Read more ›

Along with DEATH WISH 2, MS. 45 / ANGEL OF VENGEANCE stands out as the best revenge/vigilante film ever made. The Bronson/Winner film is great because, of course, Charles Bronson. Ms. 45 - directed by America's best director of all time, Abel Ferrara and starring Zoe Tameris - is a worthy alternative.
The French version is the full uncut unrated version (the US print is slightly cut). The UK release is also based on the unrated version, but the BBFC saw it necessary to cut a few scenes, although the film would probably pass uncensored today.
Ms. 45 features bloody shoot-outs - although mild in comparison with today's standard - and two rape scenes, which are not really that graphic.
Unlike most other films in the revenge/vigilante genre MS. 45 is less action orientated and has has a deeper psychological aspect. Much time and thought was given to the character deveopment, brilliantly portrayed by Zoe Tamerlis.

Death Wish [1974], Death Wish 2 (1981) Bronson's the KING of the vigilantes.

Dirty Weekend [1993] Also a good variation of the female vigilante story

I Spit On Your Grave (a.k.a. Day Of The Woman) [1978] (REGION 1) (NTSC) [1977] The most controversial in this genre, but nonetheless a great revenge film!

I've done a few reviews of Abel Ferrara films over the years, but I have to say "Ms 45"(Angel of Vengeance)has always been my favourite. It's just such an excellent film and is also one of my all time favourite films. And this French DVD is uncut unlike the pervious dvd releases so it's the one to definitely pick up.
As for the film of course Zoe Tamerlis stars as Thana the young mute woman who is raped twice in the same day. Basically she loses her sanity completely and takes to the streets at night and looks for men to kill growing more disturbed all the time. The performance from Zoe Tamerlis and the direction from Abel Ferrara are just faultless. The gritty seedy New York locations are effective and the atmosphere throughout perfect for the film. It's a stylish piece of work with imagination and some great visuals. The slo mo end sequence at the halloween party just has to be one of the greatest scenes ever. It's so atmospheric and disturbing and stylish and memorable. Some people may pick at some floors of the film(the annyoing landlady etc),but to me this is just brilliant!
