Especially valuable for its account of the "Chapel Perilous" experience in which some form of trauma or disillusionment with ordinary reality has excessively and somewhat unhealthily driven the desire to explore other realities.
A healthy exploration of spiritual reality is founded on being balanced and grounded in the body and emotions of everyday life and relationships, plus a desire to know and "become" oneself [and life] more fully. Healthy spiritual development is NOT DRIVEN BY DISILLUSIONMENT, FRUSTRATION OR REJECTION of ordinary life and relationships. If it is, then we enter an ego-generated experience of the spiritual reality [as opposed to soul-generated] where there is an unhealthy excess of fantasy, struggle and horror.
Unfortunately much shamanic exploration and development in 21st century digital-age societies is trying to simply transpose what has worked in rural indigenous communities living close to nature. But we do not have the indigenous holistic, "edge of survival" tribal lifestyle close to nature. We mostly live fragmentedly in our heads and are disconnected from our bodies and emotions much of the time as we live in "internet browsing", "sedentary chatting", TV-watching, office-chair lifestyles. These are the lifestyle factors that contemporary shamanism has to work from, in edging us back to healthier and more fulfilling, holistic "mind, body, spirit" living. The UK Shamanism Today initiative has arisen because of this quest to develop an implementation of shamanism that can work in our culture. Alli's manual is a useful contribution to this movement.Read more ›
