Plenty of people are going to enjoy this book. The writing is accomplished, the characters are really engaging, there is a lot to like. I have no quarrel with those giving it five stars.
For me I finished the book with a slight feeling of underwhelm. This book is essentially a Sherlock/Ripper fantasy reimagining. A good one, I especially liked Dr Doyle. But when you think about how many interesting people lived in Victorian/Edwardian London I feel like I'm longing for other stories to be told. So loss of half a star for lack of originality.
Secondly having read The Five by Hallie Rubenhold my view the women the Ripper murdered has undergone a total sea-change. I found myself wincing at Addison descriptions of them. Intellectually I don't expect a writer to read all the books about a thing, but you can't say that to an emotional reaction. Loss of half a star for that.
