Format: Audio CD
Avantasia is a project composed and put together by vocalist Tobias Sammet of Edguy. The first Avantasia releases were the 'The Metal Opera' parts 1 and 2. Both records are regarded as some of the best, modern power metal albums and feature famous guests such as Michael Kiske, Kai Hansen and Timo Tolkki. The project was revived in 2008 with the release of the album 'The Scarecrow'. The album featured famous guests such as Alice Cooper, Jorn Lande and Rudolf Schenker, among others and the music leaned more towards hard rock rather than power metal. The Scarecrow was amongst the 20 best selling albums in Europe upon it's release.

On April 3, 2010, Tobias Sammet released The Scarecrow's sequel, as a double album named "The Wicked Symphony & Angel Of Babylon" or as two separate disks. The main musicians remain the same, with Tobias Sammet on bass and lead vocals, Sascha Paeth (ex-Heaven's Gate) on guitars and Eric Singer (Kiss) on drums.

The list of guest vocalists is shorter, compared to The Wicked Symphony, but still impressive! Jon Oliva (Savatage, Jon Oliva's Pain), Jorn Lande (ex-Ark, Masterplan), Russell Allen (Symphony X), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Place Vendome), Bob Catley (Magnum) and Cloudy Yang.

Guest musicians include guitarists Bruce Kulick (ex-Kiss, ex-Meat Loaf) and Oliver Hartmann (ex-At Vance), keyboardist Jens Johansson (Stratovarius) and both Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody) and Felix Bohnke (Edguy) on drums.

"Angel Of Babylon" is a very solid release, but weaker in comparison to The Wicked Symphony and The Scarecrow. As in the prequels, the music focuses more on hard rock with bombastic choruses and great guitar melodies.

If you are looking at this cd then I am fairly sure you know Avantasia already. If you do not already own metal opera part1 & part 2 and the scarecrow then buy those albums first.

I found the songs on this album lacked the harder edge of those earlier albums, after the scarecrow the music of avantasia seems to be becoming decidedly less metal and more (softer, whinier even).

If you own the other albums then this album is ok, some will enjoy it I'm sure but I doubt many will prefer it to the aforementioned releases.

A Good Metal Album, but Weaker than The Wicked Symphony is probably all I need to say to sum it up.

Could of course look at it another way: If I had not heard The Wicked Symphony first I may have been tempted to give it 5 stars.

Nothing on the album that you would not expect, it is just not as special.

This was a good album with some classic rock opera tracks. I really enjoyed what Tobias has produced here finding the album a nice mix of melodic rock to heavy full on metal. For fans of Edguy.
