- The slow cooking process allows you to use cheap cuts of meats to become full flavoured and tender by the end of the cooking process

First try with this model today, I thought an easy recipe of poached chicken in white wine & garlic stock with mini carrots, sprouts, broccoli and onions would be a nice test of its sensitivities.
Started on high, having preheated unit and wine/stock. After 1.5 hours switched to auto (which is only really a time-delay on the low setting for starting off the cooking, not a true auto-sensor). However after another 4 hours (one high, three low according to blurb), stock was only tepid so switched back to high for last 1.5 hrs.
Chicken was moist, just turning to dry. Stock was delicious, but still only warm. Veg firm/crunchy to bite - even broccoli! However not sure chicken could have taken whole time at high. Despite this, base of unit VERY hot & to be avoided. The bowl also sits high out of the unit and radiates heat- noticeable from 6ft away. This lack of insulation - as in typical stoneware cookers - is wasteful and inefficient. Also notwithstanding the sales pitch, altho' you can see your food cooking, of course it is still necessary to occasionally lift the lid to check temp, flavour & so on)
On closer examination, many of the previous 5* reviews are largely about the benefits of slo-cooking, not this cooker per se. And even some of those tell of using the high setting throughout to get good results.
Will try red meats and tagine over next few weeks. However on initial impressions - NOT recommended over better performing, much cheaper models.
Have now tried cooker with lamb tagine, and pot roasted beef brisket.Read more ›
The cooker was half price when i purchased it & even had a free tagine with it! the unit arrived very fast & there was no damage as the cooker was well packaged so i was confident that once the box was opened there would not be any bits laying around.
I looked at the reviews before purchasing the unit & from the first try of the cooker i can see that they are all correct with their praise as the food was hot & cooked just right & the glass lid makes it even more simple to keep a check on how things are going.
The first meal in it was a sausage & veg casserole & the cooker was left on low so that when i got home it would be ready to serve.
The food was very hot & normally the taste is so so but once i had tried a mouthfull of it done this way i could taste more of the flavours, will stick to the slow cooker way from now on.
The unit is simple to use with three settings & a helpfull light to indicate that it is on & the unit itself is easy to clean.
So far after a few uses i am pleased that i purchased this one & know that i will get a lot of years out of it. Well done for a great product!
I bought this particular model for the glass cooking bowl which allows you to see what's going on without opening the lid. It is basically a sturdy casserole dish which sits just above the heating element on bushes. I particularly like the auto setting which alternates between high and low settings as necessary. There is a tagine cooking dish as well but I haven't tried this out yet.
Have now used several times using both my own recipes and supermarket bought sauces. Works very well with both. Tastes better when meat browned and onions softened first. Other vegetables, particularly root vegetables may require par cooking dependent on total cooking time, or cut them into small pieces. I have been using cooking times based on slow cooker recipes. Basically the larger the lump(s) of meat, the longer the cooking time required. I like my red meats with a little bit of "chew" in them so reduce cooking times accordingly.
All in all I have found this slow cooker very good. The only reason it hasn't got a fifth star is that I haven't used it for long enough to determine it's full capabilities. It's certainly big enough for the job, it doesn't seem to burn anything, it's power consumption is lower than most, and it is cleaned easily. It does take up a fair bit of room, but due to it's shape, probably less so than the oval and square models out there.
