5.0 out of 5 stars Dean Wareham - Anesthesia 28 Nov. 2012
By R. Kesler - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Prior to the releases being re-released by Dean Wareham when he formed Luna, this UK import EP features Hamish Kilgour and Jimmy Chambers on drums, with Dean Wareham alone on guitar and vocals. Unlike the vinyl releases this EP contains three tracks.

"Anesthesia" was Dean Wareham's first release after leaving Galaxie 500 and setting out on his own. While the song itself wouldn't sound out of place on a Galaxie 500 album, it is a step forward, marking the career Dean would develop with Luna. Matter of fact, "Anesthesia" shows up on the first Luna release, sounding pretty much like it does here, full of airy lyrical guitar solos, and ushering in a new chapter for the genre of neo-psychedelic music. "I Can't Wait," is brilliant as well, though the guitars ring with much greater resonance, while the drumming doesn't just set the pace, they stand on their own as a musical force reckoned with, sparking a style that Luna would later adapt to their own unique sound. "Tomato Poodle" is the surprise gem on the EP, and an instrumental no less, much in the style of Deans other instrumental release "West Broadway."

"Anesthesia" and "I Can't Wait" were recorded on a July 4th weekend at Fun City! studios with Warton Tiers producing. Dean played everything but the drums, which are handled on "Anesthesia" by Mercury Rev's Jimy Chambers, and on "I Can't Wait" by Hamish Kilgour of the Clean. An additional U.K. only track, "Tomato Poodle" is an instrumental recorded by Dean at home on his Portastudio, hence a little hiss may be heard.

Dean Wareham made this 3 song, 7 1/2 minute ep after the end of
Galaxie 500 and the start of Luna.

It is ok but for true fans only.
