An incredible amount of information is to be found in detailed but concise entries intelligently arranged and cross-referenced. It is an easy-to-use, fast reference text of value to FRCA students, their tutors, jobbing anaesthetists and their assistants.
There was not much room for improvement from the previous editions of this book, but this has been achieved. Not only aesthetically . but also with the content update and clearer illustrations. We would recommend this book to all anaesthetists in training.
British Journal of Anaesthesia
An invaluable text for those at any stage of training and to those who wish to use it as a ready reference text...an essential addition to any anaesthetic department for both anaesthetists and intensive care practitioners.

So useful as both a reference book and getting an over view of a new topic.
Useful that it gives you an online copy as well that can be downloaded to your phone so you can always have it with you.
Would be definitely one of the few books I heavily recommend when starting to learn anaesthetics
The A-Z gives good up-to-date anaesthetically-orientated coverage of a spectrum of topics. Broadly speaking it covers:
1) Scientific and mathematical principles of human physiology and pharmacology including historic and advances in anaesthesia in an encyclopaedia-like format,.
2) Concise overviews of acute medicine with more detailed expansions relating to perioperative and postoperative anaesthesia,
3) Reference notes on anaesthetic procedures and techniques,
4) Extra useful references e.g. statistical analysis.
It's definitely an A-Z encyclopaedia and not a textbook for exam preparation. If you want a quick definition or explanation of a principle, it's ideal. Realistically though, it lacks the supportive background and flow of a good textbook to sit down and learn from, so I would not recommend it for this purpose. Its alphabetic format makes it pretty easy to dip in and out for succinct overviews. I didn't particularly like its format on the whole. Pages are very wordy, aren't very visually appealing, paragraphing is quite clumpy. It reads rather like a dictionary and its format is far more functional and doesn't make a particularly stimulating learning experience. Browsing for a definition as you might do in a dictionary or encyclopaedia isn't actually that easy because individual letters of the alphabet are not highlighted on the book's fore edge.
The hard copy comes with online e-book access which is very handy as this book's best use is as a quick-access encyclopaedic reference book. The hard copy is quite a cumbersome paperback due to its comprehensive and broad content, so an online edition is a blessing to those wanting a quick reference at work.
Great anaesthesia reference book covering an enormous spectrum of anaesthesia-related topics. However, not a book I would choose to learn from routinely due to its unfriendly format.
