I've been driven to write this review after reading so many misconceptions about The Black Crowes over the years. Although I am a longterm fan, of their six studio albums to date I'd only recommend three: this, The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion and Three Snakes & One Charm. All contain one common link - Marc Ford on guitar.
Amorica sees the Crowes at a plateau they have yet to better. Coming off the High As The Moon tour in 1993 the band decamped to LA and started recording an album called Tall. To cut a long story short, they ditched the finished article and began again from scratch. The result is Amorica, a record so dense I still hear new sounds when I play it through headphones. And I bought this CD on the day of its release in 1994.
About those misconceptions - most people know the Crowes for Shake Your Moneymaker, a decent enough rock record from 1990. Two years later, The Southern Harmony... followed. It was a quantum leap for the band; the recruitment of guitarist Marc Ford and keyboardist Eddie Harsch solidifying the band's soul. As the band grew into the fiercest act of the 1990s, both onstage and in the studio, sales dipped considerably. With Amorica the Crowes made their defining statement - a beautifully dirty, grimy stew of southern rock, old school r'n'b, and energy.
Opening with the wonderfully grimy Gone, before heading straight into the confrontational A Conspiracy, this is the sound of a band at the peak of its powers - a peak most bands never achieve and can only dream of. Cursed Diamond contains some stunning lyrics courtesy of Chris Robinson, while She Loves Good Sunflower is this fan's favourite Crowes song.
It pains me what happened to this band.

If you have either of the previous two albums by these boys (shake your moneymaker or the southern.... then you will appreciate this, the third in a trilogy of no-nonsense good-time blues-rock.it opens with three crackers in "gone","a conspiracy" & "high head blues" then calms down for at least four tracks (this isn't to say they aren't any cop, just not as loud!) & ends with a classy ballad called "descending".on the original version a friend taped for me there is a bonus called "tied up and swallowed" which doesn't appear on the enhanced version but is pretty cracking so if you can seek out the original album this may be a better bet.if not this is a pretty apt substitute.it's a pity they went downhill afterwards although saying that i think "by your side" is worth a couple of listens.

As a massive Black Crowes fan it will come as no surprise that I rate this album 5 out of 5.
This for me is the Black Crowes at there finest. The album oozes class with beautiful songs and melodies creating a richer more spiritual musical experience. Maybe not quite so immidiate as the earlier, straight ahead rock aproach of "Shake your money maker" and "Southern Harmony" but let this one float and sink in and you'll be in for an aural treat way beyond just good rock n roll. This is not only my fave BC album but also rates as one of my all time top 10 , essential for any serious music fan. Enjoy :)

I first heard this album in 1995, and it is still my favourite album to this day. Lyrically untouchable. It takes this genre of music (blues/rock) to new heights. Tracks such as Cursed Diamond, She Gave Good Sunflower and Wiser Time are truly all time classics. Any one who is a true music fan will truly appreciate this album. The sheer feeling and deepness the music on this CD expresses is just incomprehensible. You MUST buy it!

Is it really 20 years..?

Possibly The Black Crowes' finest hour, running close to 'The Southern Harmony...' - this album is a journey from start to finish; shades of dark and light, joy and melancholy... 'Cursed Diamond' gives me goosebumps everytime; the playing is just incredible, especially the guitar interplay between Marc Ford and Rich Robinson... a classic album that I couldn't live without. If I was still that way inclined, I should imagine it would sound very good with headphones, Jack Daniels and a herbal jazz cigarette....

An album I still play regularly, this is the black crowes continuing the diversion from their debut mainstream album "shake your money maker" that they began with their second album "southern harmony...". Not instantly likeable (but then chances are if it is, it's because it's just like something else you already own) but well worth the wait.
If you like music, buy this album!

black crowes amorica album caused a stir with parents and the media when this album came out not for the musical content but for the explict cover.well now that's out the way this is black crowes third best album behind shake your money maker by your side, both being blues rock classic and both should be listened too if only once.
this album has some hard rocking tunes and some slowed paced ballads that let you get out your lighters and waving your hands like a crazed fan. the melodies are delious that you want to eat them if they were a dessert LOL.
If you like Blues Country rock then this album is for you and if not then your the ones missing out.
standout tracks.. Gone, Comspiracy, cursed diamond she gave good sunflower...
