Product Description

Product Description

Several years in the making this is SCS Software’s biggest and most ambitious project to date with the team head count tripled to create the most authentic truck driving experience yet.
Legendary American trucks will deliver a variety of cargo across the United States as you take a journey through the breath-taking landscapes and widely recognized landmarks around the States.
This first edition covers the sunshine state of California where you will drive your truck along the Pacific Coast Highway, known as State Route 1, and enjoy those landmarks that resonate with the USA.
Enhanced sound effects make the game more authentic with different sounds appropriate to the day/night cycle such as the industrial sounds of the depots you are delivering to and the mélange of dialects you would expect to find in such a diverse continent.
Game mechanics are based on the highly successful model from Euro Truck Simulator 2 and have been expanded with new features, creating the most captivating game experience from SCS Software.
American Truck Simulator puts you in the seat of a driver for hire entering the local freight market, making you work your way up to create one of the largest transportation companies in the United States.

If you liked ETS2 you'll like this. Pretty much just ETS2 with lots of sand for scenery. Cities feel a lot more substantial in size this time around which i did like as i always felt cities in ETS2 consisted of nothing more than a ring road and a couple of streets. Los Angeles feels like a big city (within reason of course) rather than say London in ETS2 which felt more like a big village. Only 2 trucks available at launch but that doesn't really matter if all you want to do is chill while driving a huge USA-style truck. California and Nevada are the 2 states included at launch (Arizona will apparently be a free DLC later-on) but the amount of road this adds up to is substantial enough to keep you busy and the more iconic cities in those states are nicely represented.

1st of all be aware that the Kenworth W900 featured on some images was included in a patch and is now available in the game in a form of a free DLC, which should be automatically downloaded for your game after installation

I have a steam copy of it and just want to write a quick review about this, well a bit rushed out game
Don't get me wrong its not buggy, but the content just isn't there, only two trucks on release and only two states,
not much new was added since ETS2, gameplay and core element are almost if not totally identical meaning no tandem trucks, no rigid lorries, no extreme trucking on ice and snow with new physics, well no new physics at all, no interior addons and personalization and many other missing things that would be expected judging by the time it took to make this game.
Graphics look a bit better than Euro Truck Simulator 2, but its still based on an outdated (DX9) engine, though it now only supports 64bit systems due to high RAM requirements of the game itself (4GB ram minimum) that allows it to run much smoother with better framerate stability.

The scaling of the map areas is very small, so if you used to play a heavily modified ETS2 with large map mods, you will find it tiny at best.
It only took me 10minutes to drive half way though California doing 55mph.
Arizona state map will be a free DLC as will more trucks as soon as the developers get license to use those trucks in game, but there is no date for that yet and that is the only content promised, so new core elements and no new gameplay changes or addons were announced so far.

After almost 3 years of waiting, this game has turned out to be the biggest disappointment ever from SCS. It is nothing more than ETS2 with some new scenery and a couple of different trucks, making it a 2012 technology game released in 2016. There really is nothing new, nothing updated, and the two states initially available are so condensed that you can cover every road in just a few hours.

I can't even begin to think of the hours I've played ETS2 since its release in 2012 (which was also delayed time and time again) but having now put in about 28 hours on ATS, and only to release the upgrades, I'm absolutely bored to tears with it...I literally couldn't even play it again as it's just such a chore.

With 48 states still to build and release (if people are willing to buy them) I personally doubt it will ever be completed, and they will be forced to pull the plug on it when most lose interest waiting on the years involved to build up the United States, state by state, and the fact that they refuse to innovate and upgrade their technology, just selling the same old game over and over, hoping people will just keep buying it.

SCS had a good thing going, but prefer to stay stuck in an out of date rut, and refuse to listen to the requests and demands of their loyal fans.

I seriously wouldn't waste my money on any more of their games or the DLC's promised...all round poor result, and an insult to the fans who have supported them for so long. Stale, out of date, boring, and out of touch with their supporters.

Yeah, it's OK, but, nothing too dramatic, which, after nearly 3 years waiting, is a bitter disappointment. I concur with some of the other reviewers that state it could have been better, like all the hype and screenshots you get drawn in thinking it's going to bowl you over, then, when you get it, it's, well, it's, nothing fantastic. Anyway, now that we've got it, we'll just have to make do. It's had a makeover with many cosmetic changes, added a lot more animated stuff, such as cropsprayers flying over orchards, and guys washing windows and sweeping floors, which adds a bit more to the game than what we had in ETS2. It's best to obtain some of the modifications now on offer for new starters, the speeding fines and jumping red lights, for example, are dreadfully big, you only start with $1500 in the bank, you can drive for 300 yards and get punished by $1400, so, no fun there, in fact, it was highly frustrating, and I had to wait a couple of days before someone came up with a mod for less punishments financially and more money to start your trucking empire with, not a good start by SCS standards to their loyal supporters. Anyway, after a fortnight it's got a lot more trucks and trailers and reskins into authentic American companies now on various websites to freely install to make the game more bearable, it's also worth noting that there are also some assets to download to tone down the colour saturation and improve the clouds and weather, etc, you'll need to hunt these down from various sources, but, when you have them installed the game isn't half bad now to drive around in.
Would I recommend this ATS to the casual gamer, yes, for the fun element of driving big rigs across various American States, but, don't expect a brand new game built on state of the art 2016 computer specifications and expectations, 'cos, it just isn't there.
