Great book, lots of information and lots of pictures. Note - this is not a "How to Garden" book, instead its a factual account of the Whitehouse allotment and a look at local production that has been inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Everything I Hoped For and More! 3 Dec. 2012
By LESLIE D ULM - Published on Amazon.com

As a vegetable/fruit/flower gardener for three dozen years now who has accumulated nearly as many garden books, my family reminded me that we hardly needed another "garden book." Yet my gardening interests have grown over many years to include promoting children's gardens in schoolyards, at summer camps, and giving workshops in libraries and in community gardens to demostrate best environmental practices and to answer questions. This book can give hope and joy to individuals, families, and gardening groups who want to make a difference in how we can all grow organically cultivated crops for the table and enjoy the harvest of our efforts. I give credit to First Lady Michelle Obama for using the center stage of the White House Kitchen Garden to improve the nutritional and physical health of individuals who learn by experience what it takes to grow colorful, tasty food in a garden. The photos in this book are inspirational and the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter layout make this a useful companion year round. This book uses the voices--and photos--of many experienced gardeners from around the country who are a part of the community gardening movement that notes well organized community gardens "grow community" as well as produce.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desiring healthier eating habits 28 Feb. 2015

I haven't had a chance to read the book thoroughly yet, hoping for some spring weather someday here in Ohio. But I did leaf through it and I see some really interesting ideas for box gardening, which is what I'm interested in. The photos are beautiful and the book goes through the seasons and tells what is best to plant at different times throughout the year. I'm looking forward to exploring it more closely very soon. The price was very reasonable.
5.0 out of 5 stars I have truly enjoyed this book. 17 May 2013

As a long time gardener, a member of the PA Horticultural Society and having been a judge in the Philadelphia City Gardens contest for close to 20 years there are few things I enjoy more than reading about gardens. I enjoy gardening and I was thrilled to read how this garden was started, how the children were engaged in the garden and the history of gardening at the White House and in areas around the country. I was inspired to garden by my Mother who was inspired by her Dad. My Mom showed me the wonders of my Grandfather's garden when I was a little girl and I am still in awe of what takes place when a seed is planted in the right place under the right conditions. I am thrilled to see other enjoy the garden as I do.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bought 7 to donate to local public library branches 19 May 2013

As a storyteller, I've been asked to present programs in the Western Plains (OK) Library System for their 2013 Summer Reading Program. The theme is "Dig In for Reading." So...gardening seemed a natural focus. [One story I'll be using is by fellow storyteller Jay O'Callahan, "Herman and Marguerite," which tells of Herman (a worm), Marguerite (a caterpiller), and an orchard.] As a souvenir for each library I'm working in, I'm donating a copy of "American Grown." The book is a perfect way to say "thank you" to each community. And it's multi-generational! The photos are lovely, and don't forget the recipes! I'm baking the white chocolate-dried cranberry-carrot cookies for a reception this week.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Can ALL Do It !!!! 30 Jun. 2012
By Bobcat - Published on Amazon.com

The best thing about the book is the history of the White House Gardens and seeing the First Lady working with everyday children. I don't think we have every had a First Lady the work so closely with under priviledge children. It's step by step guide to creating your own garden. Just a few seeds can feed, thousands. A very BEAUTIFUL cover and the pictures inside are gems to keep forever. First Lady Michelle Obama, THANK YOU for caring so much for our childrens health and being so concern about Americans health. My hope is that this book will end up in ALL Americans homes and that it reache other countries. We can ALL create a garden.
