fits in your pocket

This little book is a wonder. Yes the pricing and time info for sites is way out of date but the sites themselves haven't changed much in 100 plus years. The concise histories on the city, architecture, painting and sculpture therein are quick reads and give you context for what you're seeing. The maps in the back are good and the book fits easily in a jacket pocket or the back pocket of your jeans.

Fantastic maps. They show every little street and canal, although not all are named because of the small scale. But if you've ever tried navigating in Venice (and inevitably gotten lost), you will appreciate that you can count on it to show you what is there, and not leave out what might be considered "minor" streets. And the fact that they are all easily located in the back of the book means you're not unfolding and refolding some huge unwieldy piece of paper continually. I wish they would reissue it in an up-to-date edition! In the meantime, I'm guarding my copy with my life!
