Irving Berlin was a phenomenon who churned out hit after hit, not merely composing the tunes but also the lyrics, and many of his creations have become standards. This fine compilation brings together a couple of dozen played by some of the best American dance bands of the time. His songs were optimistic reflections on life, as witness the upbeat "Puttin' on the Ritz", recorded during the Great Depression by Jan Garber with a hot trumpet solo by Jimmy McPartland, and Ben Selvin's cheerful "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy". There's something comforting about Berlin's songs, many of which were written specially for Hollywood films. Geoff Milne's excellent liner note traces Berlin's career and the background to the compositions. It's a superb compilation, with not a dull track, and a worthy sequel to JASMCD 2601 (American Dance Bands play Cole Porter) and the only disappointment is that Jasmine did not continue the series.

Irving Berlin's composing career spanned an incredible 60 years (his first lyrics to a song were published in 1907) and his compositions fill twelve pages in Laurence Bergreen's exhaustive biography. So the twenty four numbers are only the tiniest tip of an enormous iceberg. Producer Geoff Milne took some of Berlin's most familiar tunes, some played by bands we still remember today, such as Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Paul Whiteman and Benny Goodman, bands that have become less familiar, such as Charlie Spivak, Ben Selvin, Gus Arnheim or Rudy Vallee, but also a number of bands that may only be known to the die hards among dance band lovers, as there are: Dolly Dawn, Enric Madriguera, George Olsen, Jan Garber and Ozzie Nelson. Also, Milne included some titles you will not readily find elsewhere: Ray Noble's "Let's Face the Music and Dance", Glen Gray's "Let Yourself Go", Bob Crosby's "All By Myself", Joe Haymes's "Mandy" or Kay Kyser's "I'm Sorry For Myself". The original records were issued between 1926 and 1942. The CD is rounded off by recording dates and matrix numbers and some biographical info on Berlin and the tunes. Remastering is perhaps a touch too strong to suit my tastes, but nevertheless the CD is a very well worth addition to my collection. There is also a companion CD dedicated to Cole Porter: American Dance Bands Play the Music of Cole Porter. It might be a good idea for Jasmine to continue the American Dance Band series with other composers, for there is yet a lot to be discovered on the other side of the pond.
