Having seen the film, and not really noticed the beautiful incidental music, I heard 'any other name' on JazzFM's Late Lounge show, and was captivated. I recently saw the film again, and this time I listened out for the soundtrack, and realised how great it was. I almost made the mistake of buying the OST version, though, so make sure it is the Thomas Newman score CD. It is the true essence of the film; tragic and beautiful.

A glimpse at the 70 or so reviews that have sprung up on Amazon.com for this masterpiece gives some indication of how important Thomas Newman's score to the 1999 Sam Mendes tour de force has become. It was indeed a special film that required something extraordinary from its musical collaborator. Newman hits the spot with the ethereal soundtrack to our vision of a man who is clearly either losing it or learning to get it right, whichever way the viewer interprets Kevin Spacey's tragi-comic deviation from the life that is expected of him. The two principal themes of 'Dead Already' and 'American Beauty' are deeply moving and pass the test of standing alone, away from the images of the film.
Thomas Newman has managed to extend the tradition of exellence that is expected from such an outstanding musical dynasty. The Newman family sits at the heart of 20th Century American music, with its variety of messages displaying a quintessential American sound, from Alfred Newman's scores of the 1940's right up to the present day. Anybody approaching Thomas Newman's work here for the first time should take time to listen to his work on 'The Player' and 'Shawshank' as well as picking up cousin Randy Newman's outstanding orchestral soundtrack to 'The Natural'.
In summary, an exceptional piece of work that will justifiably stand the test of time as an 'American Beauty' in its own right.

never has a film affected the way i live my life in such a way. the film american beauty combined with the delicate, beautiful soundtrack created by thomas newman creates a powerful message across to its audience which is hard to ignore.
the soundtrack itself is a work of art in its own right giving an emotional, mellow atmosphere that seems to slow life right down and give you time to reflect on what’s important, and what’s not. it isolates the listener and blocks them off from the outside world, and allows you to relate yourselve to the modern day tragic hero, lester.
highly recommend listening to it on a bus or walking through a busy street for watching life just drift by, or is perfect for a long hot bath too.

After Shawshank I didn't think Thomas Newman could possibly get any better. And when I saw the film I was just captivated by the film, and the score was so moving I was dying to get hold of a copy but it took me a lot of searching. I have had this CD for a week now and I haven't taken it out of my player yet. Unfortunatly it's a little short but short and sweet always leaves you wanting more I find! Also Check out Meet Joe Black which is a beautiful soundtrack by Newman. The guy is GOD!

I first heard Thomas Newman when i watched American Beauty. When i watched the scene with the paper bag, (Any other name is the track), I was instantly drawn in, the sheer beauty of the musci was one i have never experienced before. I dont usually find classical music very interesting, however i find Thomas Newman to be the best most emotional composer i have ever encountered.
I try to see all films in which Thomas Newman composed the music. For me the greatest masterpiece he has created, along with superb direction, is the scene in Shawshank Redemption "Brooks was here." In light of the music, in my view that film is and shall always be the best film i have ever seen. The Green Mile also displays similar brilliance.

I really loved listening to the soundtrack from American Beauty, and with a birthday on the way, thought I should get it when a relative offered to buy it for me.
What can I say, it's sheer bliss. If you want endless versions of those beautiful tunes, I'm afraid this isn't the one for you, as the music score was only written for select scenes and is sadly, far too short! However, you can listen to it over and over again without having to overheat and confuse your DVD/Video players.
It is well worth the money, a superb, relaxing and wonderful score that can be listened to and enjoyed without having seen the film. For me, it also brought back wonderful pictures in my mind of all those favourite "American Beauty Moments". Number 2 is my favourite for relaxation.
Enjoy,

A very fine recording. A tip for enthusiasts. The Bass synth distorted on track one. I found out that my Marantz 6005 CD playing was throwing out up to 3v output. Whereas the Amplifier CD input was rated at 500 to 750 mv. Therefore I fitted a QED attenuator. Problem solved...

American Beauty as a peice of film drama is outstanding, I feel one of the best films ever made, but the original soundtrack by Thomas Newman is once heard , always played. Sound and vision in a symbiotic relationship. The Tracks are , beautiful, haunting , and able to stir memories of the film and it's characters as well as being a stand-alone work of genius in it's own right.
Please listen and you will not be disappointed,- or I will eat rose petals!!!!!
