Product Description

Seu Jorge returns with his first album of original material since “Cru” in early 2005. On the one hand this album manifests his musings on the complex relationship between North and South America, while on the other Jorge says: “Cru was international, this is for the Brazilian audience who wanted some traditional samba, samba rock, ballads and gafiera to dance to and enjoy at weekend barbecues.” Seu Jorge (Mr. George) made his live UK debut as part of La Linea ’05 at the Royal Festival Hall where the line up consisted of acoustic guitar, cavaquinho, percussion and bass. On his recent triumphant return to the same venue the line up had grown to include keyboards, violin, harmonica, kit drums with Jorge on occasional electric guitar and flute. This is the line up showcased here. Jorge: “The instrumentation is a joke on US culture. Brazil grew up with European influences principally from Portugal but is more influenced now by US. Now we want to be winners like Americans." Tracks: America De Norte / Trabalhador / Burguesinha / Cuidar De Mim / Mina Do Condominio / Mariana / So No Chat / Samba Rock / Seu Olha / Eterna Busca/ Voz Da Massa.

Review

With América Brasil, Seu Jorge shows that he is the rightful pretender to Jorge Ben's crown. And Bezerra Da Silva's. Each track is as joyous a celebration of daily life in Rio as Ben's classic `Pais Tropical', full of wry asides that poke fun at Rio's rich and point to Brazil's colour bar and unequal social reality. It's Jorge's best work to date - successfully fusing the social samba-funk he began with on his former band's Farofa Carioca's Moro no Brasil with the looser but wonderfully rootsy feel of Cru.
The first track `América do Norte' sets the tone with Jorge's trademark fusion of traditional samba and samba funk (inspired, he told Songlines, by Chico Science and Nação Zumbi). Jorge's guitar is joined by rabeca violin, staccato mandolin, squeaking cuíca, tight kit drums, hand-claps and a bass line that's so fat and funky it could have been played by Chuck Rainey. `North America is going to samba too,' promises Jorge. You bet it is. This CD would have Dick Cheney swinging in his swivel chair. But for a couple of ballad breaks (including a delicious light samba canção tribute to his wife Mariana), Seu Jorge keeps us moving for the next musical hour - wiggling to his celebration of the Brazilian blue-collar worker, `Trabalhador', trying out our samba steps on his sharp and witty piss-take of the Rio bourgeoisie, `Burguesinha', and dancing full throttle on `Mina do Condomínio'. With América Brasil, Seu Jorge requires the world to get up and go. And even dance a little samba.
